Amazon.com for sending two wiper blades, each in their own 6 x 16 x 28 inch boxes and about 18 feet of wadded-up 30" wide brown paper in each box.

But it IS all recyclable. And biodegradable !

The real excessive packaging awards should go to people that use those darn plastic peanuts. I don't mind the corn starch ones- you can use them for mulch. But the styrofoam ones go straight from the ground (oil) to the landfill.

. . .the worst is when they ship something somewhat delicate in a box with plastic air pillows (the pillows don't even fill the entire box). . .and the item gets destroyed on the way to you. . .no matter what you say they will reship the same way. . .

I agree! I got the same - not only excessive packaging, but wasteful on shipping fees.

And, I did recycle the boxes today - did my monthly recycling run with paper, plastic, steel, aluminum, clear and colored glass and cardboard.

I won some Michelin blades from a radio call-in contest.

They're $20 each (blades in holder) and don't follow the curve of the windshield that well, but we'll see if they last six years like the OEM cheapies.

The real excessive packaging awards should go to people that use those darn plastic peanuts. . . the styrofoam ones go straight from the ground (oil) to the landfill.

I always save and reuse them when I'm shipping something, so they get used at least twice.

I reuse them also, and found out that the local shipping store (e.g. Mailboxes Etc, UPS Store) usually takes them gladly for their own use.

Have you every purchased children's toys, especially things like action figures and vehicles?

They are generally bound by 20 twist ties to a maddening confabulation of clear plastic, scotch tape and cardboard. Occasionally, you need a philips-head screwdriver to remove the toy from the package.

I agree that it appears like excessive packaging but it's exactly how I like things to arrive. Today I sent off seven model railway items I sold on eBay and six of them went in ex Amazon or similar boxes and all were well wrapped and supported with bubblewrap and that twisted brown paper. Haven't had to buy boxes or internal packing materials in years and my eBay feedback ratings often praise my packing. I am lucky to have the space to store the stuff until needed.

I'm not sure if you win the award this week....

Here is the other contender:

Yours produced MORE packaging, but this one was packaging to ship packaging....

I got one Bosch blade packaged like that yesterday. The other one's not due for a couple of days.

Sometimes I wish Amazon would let me pick an option like No, Really, Ship Them All Together, It's Not About The Cost, I Really Would Prefer To Get All My Stuff In One Box. I can't help but wonder how much money they waste splitting orders up like this when the customer really doesn't care.

As for styrofoam peanuts, I reuse them when I ship something. And I also use them when I make wine barrel planters. The biodegradable ones are neat, sure, but also serve as rat food, so I can't fault a company for eschewing them.

I think the USPS should have great big bins where you could take or leave styrofoam peanuts. I'd also like to see them introduce standard size reusable boxes.

only because you don't reuse/recycle them. I take them in garbage bags to the local mailboxes etc, and they gladly take them and reuse them.

not when I drop them off on the way home from work. I suppose stopping and re-starting the engine does consume an extra tablespoon of gasoline. But not everyone is the self-sacrificing, holier-than-thou, high-and-might H'.

This just in. Bicycle tires are made with OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Er . . . something wrong with making things from oil? I'm all for the use of oil. The sooner it gets used up, the better. Just too bad most of that is going to involve trashing the atmopsphere, covering half the planet with asphalt, and widespread human roadkill.
