Why is Spotlight so sucky?
Posted by: PeterB

1) Seems to take forever

2) Doesn't actually find the right hits, including even those which have your search term in the filename (!)

3) Faster just to find things yourself

Any ways to fix this, and/or make it better, and/or do away with it entirely?

I tried the "hack" that was given (I think) in MacWorld at one point, but it didn't seem to work properly...

I'll add these...

4) It doesn't index most of the folders on your hard drive;

5) It can't be configured to ignore all new drives or removable media;

6) It can't easily be turned off;

7) You can't revert to the old Finder search;

8) It only indexes a few kinds of files;

9) It doesn't save your favorite search settings;

10) Using it properly requires learning a new programming language.

No complaints here. Maybe you need to delete your current Spotlight Index and build a new one. I do this about once a month and it helps.

Here's a great utility for it: [www.macupdate.com] . You can also use this to turn Spotlight off.

FWIW, I've not had the problems you're noting. I use it constantly. YMMV, of course.

Before Tiger was released I thought Spotlight would be the best new feature. After using it a couple weeks I determined that it sucks and I turned it off.

Dashboard has become the best new feature introduced in Tiger in my opinion while Spotlight is nothing but a waste of space and time.

I use Namely [www.versiontracker.com] for launching apps and EasyFind for searching [www.versiontracker.com].

I haven't heard the word "sucky" since 4th grade.

I'm still laughing.

Ah, Classic. Sorry, I don't even have a Classic folder. Didn't realize this was an issue.

EasyFind is a cool app; I was using it before I started using Spotlight.

As always, YMMV, eh?

bangman, the use of the word "sucky" was intentional, and entirely reasonable in this context. It's one thing to add or introduce a "feature" which maybe needs tweaking... that I can live with. It's another to *replace* one thing, which actually worked pretty well, with one that doesn't. A big step backward, IMHO.

Zoid, I assume you've seen my other ones... if not, STF and you'll find them... froggies are (mostly) pretty photogenic.

Spotlight is a joke for me. I have the same problem that I'll search a folder for a filename. Spotlight doesn't find it. I scroll through the folder and find it myself. I have problems using it within Mail where it simply doesn't find emails I know exist and later find myself. I wish they could just license and update the code to fetch, an old classic program which worked amazingly well.

i had a lot of problems/complaints with spotlight from the beginning. I did all the spotlight directory resetting, etc. to no avail. I then ran Disk Warrior and found out my directory was so screwed up that it was causing the problem. Fixed it and I've been good ever since..

Spotlight - Sucks.
Spotless - Doesn't work.
Tiger - on it's fifth update and still this feature is broken for many, many people.
Apple - WTF???

I too got frustrated with Spotlight. Went back to using LaunchBar and all is well in the universe once again.

Quicksilver is amazing. I have it set to Option-space with Spotlight set to Cmd-space.
