Stupid wireless router question

My sister and BIL in FL are upgrading to cable modem service - the yahoos who installed it yesterday didn't come with a router, said "a technician needs to do that tomorrow" - but did tell them that one computer needs to be hard wired, the other can be wireless.

When I spoke to her last night, I told her that absolutely was not true - that since both of their iBooks have airport cards, that they will work wirelessly.

But, since they are computer novices (especially to the world of networks) they figure I don't know what I'm talking about.

Is there any validity that anyone knows about that might be specific to that cable company? (Brighthouse - part of the roadrunner system)

Hmm...

It's POSSIBLE that the router needs to be set up (for DHCP service, for example) via hard-wire before the wireless is active...

No reason at all that it can't be unplugged and all of 'em go wirelessly after that.

At least, not that I'm aware of.

One computer needs to be hardwired? Not sure what they're talking about but, if it is a wireless or wired router, a computer may need to be hooked up to it initially to fiddle with the settings.

Others will have more insight than I do. I'm setting up DSL on Monday morning here.

That's what I was thinking Paul

I've had Cable modem & DSL and both required initial set up hardwired
but I can surf wirelessly even if the main mac (hardwired) is shut down.

What the others said: Needs to be hard-wired during configuration.

It is what it is.

Yup, hard-wire for setup and then you can do whatever.
If you need a startup after a power outage or if the modem or router drops carrier, then you will need to unplug the router first, then the cable than startup modem and last of all startup router. For some reason the order makes a big difference.
