Steve Wozniak slams Apple over Intel and iPods

"He said the move to Intel chips was "like consorting with the enemy". Apple had a long tradition of saying that the enemy is the "big black-hatted guys, and they kind of represent evil. We are different, and by being different we're better"."

I like Woz, met him at several events, but what has he done since the "US" festival?
I do respect him for being a teacher, but where is his multi-billion dollar company?
He's a hardware guy, he has absolutely no understanding of software.

Memo to Woz: the computer industry has changed an awful lot since you exited stage left. That rabid "us versus them" zealotry and is one big reason Apple has such a small marketshare.

I'm glad Apple's (mostly) gotten over the "not-invented-here" mindset. They're keeping what's important and truly adds value (the OS and the software) while taking advantage of the near-commodity nature of x86 hardware, putting them on a path to finally make a dent in the marketshare percentages.

I love Woz, but geez. His opinions highlight the kind of thinking needed to start a business (as opposed to growing one).

I think that if Woz had been in charge of apple the last thirty years, on February 28th they would be announcing the new Apple IIj computer (bundled with Applesoft Basic II).

Though I don't disagree with the sentiments expressed here, IF you take the time to read the article he is stating a few opinions that get the typical journalistic treatment in order to scream from the headlines . . .

So sad that that is how we typically get our news . . .

Well, we are discussing something posted on The Inquirer, so I assumed this all goes without saying...

The source of the article says it all...The Inquirer is a stupid little dirt-digging rag of a news service that has absolutely no credibility in the real world. That Woz would even allow his comments to be published/construed like that is a complete and utter shame.

To be fair, the linked article reveals "Mr. Wozniak was in New Zealand recently for a four-on-four polo tournament played on two-wheeled, self-balancing Segway gyroscopic scooters."

So how serious is he?

Do you think this is really true?

Market Cap of Intel: 122.75 Billion

Market Cap of the G4 consortium (AAPL, IBM, MOT): 241 Billion

So who's the black-hatted guy?

THere are no "Little guys" in this business.

A few people have poor reading comprehension. Or they didn't read [www.theglobeandmail.com] .

Still, the switch to Intel is a necessary one from an engineering standpoint, he said, because Apple needed a way to improve performance per watt. Mr. Wozniak would have liked Apple to continue using Motorola processors, but “Intel just did a very good logic design.”

Engineering related considerations aside, he still seems reluctant about joining the Intel camp. “If it wasn't needed, I would say we shouldn't do it. And I still have some questions as to how much it's needed.”

The Inquirer's headline is just crap journalism from a site that heralds "News, reviews, facts and friction", just not all in the same article.

Doesn't sound remotely close to a slam. But "slams" makes for a better banner, to some people's way of thinking.
