The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression by Amity Shlaes

this is the best book out there on the Depression.

There isn't ONE seminal book on the Great Depression, and also depends what aspect you are interested in i.e., underlying causes, political solutions, life during.

But here are a few to consider:

Milton Friedman's Monetary History of the U.S.: [www.amazon.com]

David Kennedy's Freedom From Fear: [www.amazon.com]

And here is "insight" by the current Fed Chairman if you want to get inside his head (I'd read Friedman before this though for perspective): [www.amazon.com]

I'll check it out. Thanks samintx. Is Amazon still a good place for book purchases of late?

Sure, unless there is a 30 or 40% off Border coupon out. There is a 30% out now, so you'll have to add in your sales tax rate and do the math.

Underlying causes, and personal experiences/accounts of an average Jane/Joe.
Thanks for the links.

My S/O's mother lived through the GD during her pre-teened years. I wanted to hear her stories but our relationship never got that close. I figured a little bit of her experience seeing her hoarding everything under sun.

Another vote for "Hard Times" by Terkel. And when you're done with that, read his "The Good War."

I just talk to my grandpa. Fascinating to compare and contrast the times of his youth with my own.

William Manchester's The Glory and the Dream, which is a history of the U.S. from 1932 to 1972. If you're interested only in the Depression you can stop at Pearl Harbor, but Manchester is so compelling I bet you won't.

The Forgotten Man by Amity Shales listened to an interview with her on econtalk podcast. Very good. Pointed out how government ineptness made it worse and longer.

For individual stories Studs Terkel
