Pretty sad that the new Nvidia card gets romped by the previous Nividia cards.

AMD is pricing it pretty well. While they can not take the ultimate performance crown, nobody else can either. For PC gaming the Nvidia GT280 and the 9800 GX2 trade places depending on the title, and the 4870 manages some clear wins when compared to Nvidia cards in the same price range.

I have not seen the real important benchmark yet, does it have a better FAH performance per Watt!?!?

Edit: Those are not cores like on a quad core CPU. Each of these "cores" only has like 8,000 transistors.

In my opinion, if you're not willing to spend $500+ on a video card, and that describes most people, the new ATI cards look pretty good.

From the ARS review:
The HD 4850 doesn't quite beat the HD 3870X2 overall, but it comes darn close. The HD 4870, meanwhile, does make a clean sweep of the 3870X2, and it does so for less money. The NVIDIA 9800 GTX ends up soundly thrashed by both cards. At the higher end, NVIDIA's 9800 GX2 and GTX 280 maintain performance superiority over the ATI HD 4800 series, but their respective price points of $499 and $649 put them far above even the 4870's comparatively modest $299 list price.

Thanks for the Core detail. That and the article made the two approaches make sense.
