Looks like I need to replace a 30-year-old toilet. It's primarily used by guests rather than for my everyday needs, so I'm not overly worried about the fact that it will have to be low-flow. But I'd like to find something good-looking and contemporary. Any recommendations under $300?

Toto. I cant say enough good things about Toto products. Buy it online and you will save some coin. I bought mine from performance toilets I think. If you do a search for Toto on here, it will show up. I have the drake and the carlisle models in my home.

We recently bought a pair of TOTO Eco Ultra Max toilets from Homeclick.com for $370 each. But since they're very low flow, we got a $125 rebate on each from the local utility.

Fantastic toilets, great performance and modern look.

I had one of these for about twenty years. Great toilet. When it was replaced with a contemporary tank toilet, I finally learned it's proper name; a "sloan valve toilet." The first site I found them on had a a pretty good troubleshooting guide.

A different beast than mine. It was quite smart looking after I tricked it out with a rather suave black seat and lid.

I did the research - Toto v American Standard - and chose AS Cadet 3. Do NOT get the AS Champion 4 which has poor reviews. I can state unequivocally that the AM flushes more efficiently than than my old 3L model. Also, unlike the Toto, the AS has a proprietary antibacterial finish (silver base) than work well. Style-wise I think the AS is more contemporary. Even buying the Toto online the AS in your local HD will be half the price. Go for it, IMHO.

I can't imagine paying double and triple the price of a decent standard toilet just to get a "Toto"..... snob appeal in toilets now? Yeah, I'm sure they are great, but all toilets flush.

Although I must say I do love the Bemis toilet seat from Home Depot that has the "slow close" feature. Flip it with the finger and walk away without bending down. $35. Okay, I know... that's triple the price of a "standard" toilet seat

I can beat that - house where I grew up was built in1922.

The servant's toilet (in a tiny half-bath off the kitchen) had the tank mounted at least 4 feet above the bowl, with a pull-chain hanging from the tank.

It was 50 years later when I was there, but I'm sure (except for the seat) that was an original "fixture"

And although it was a big house (over 5,000 sqft.), the kitchen wasn't any bigger than what I have today in my 1500 sqft. house.

Pre-WWII, it obviously wasn't the lady of the house doing the cooking.
