New Switcher... finally!

About 10 years ago a friend in another city called to ask what kind of computer he should get. Of course I recommended a Mac, even though back then I was chugging away on an old IIci. After many conversations & much discussion, he decided against a Mac because there "was no command prompt." That was the stupidest reason I'd ever heard & he got rather miffed when I told him that. He ended up getting an HP with a whopping 40MB hard drive, convinced he would never be able to fill it up. Later on he called me a few times asking technical questions about it that I couldn't answer.

We lost touch over the years but he called me a couple of weeks ago, wanting to know what type of Mac he should get. I sent him as much info as I could find so he could make up his own mind. Last night he called to tell me about his new custom ordered, tricked out 24" iMac. He's in love with it & was blown away when it found his old PC on the network, making it easy to copy files.

So what that it took 10 years; another one has entered into the fold!

I have had one or two experiences similar to this. Same deal, it took two tries. It seems like PC people have to be driven off the cliff to finally get it.

One friend did exactly the same thing as DaviDC explained. I spelled out everything, I darn near went to the store with her to buy it, but she caved at the last minute and ordered a Dell. Immediately she ran into problems and came to me because I was the "computer guy". I told her I was a Mac guy and that as I explained to her previously.......if she bought the Mac, se would get my "Lifetime Support" along with it.

I can't help with support on a Dell. After two years of struggling with some really basic stuff she finally got hit was a virus that wiped her drive.

She now has a mac that does everything she wants. I see her every other month or so and do a backup for her onto one of my drives. All is well.

I think most PC people think that if they just keep banging their heads on the wall long enough, the hurting will eventually go away.

I just love those kinds of stories!!

I've heard the PC vs Mac debate for 20 years and the die hard PC folks have such big blinders on, but the funny thing is, if they ever _do_ switch, they end up loving their Mac and wondering why it took them so long to make the switch.

Reminds me of friends of ours.

Back in 2000, they were looking for a computer. I told them about Macs. Someone they worked with told them they should buy a PC. They ended up getting a terribly underpowered Toshiba desktop Celeron model.

Around 2004; they called and said they wanted to get a new computer and this time they wanted a Mac. They bought a 1.25 GHz Mac Mini. They are still using it to this day and swear by it.

The coolest thing is listening to them talk to other people. They suggest to others to buy a Mac.

Music to my ears.

Lady I work with asked me 3 years ago what kind of computer she should get... (you can guess my answer... a Mac..).
Her husband went out and bought a Dell, naturally..

Dell has been no end of frustration for them... viruses, and Windows (of course). Drive finally got wiped by a virus or some such thing.

She came in the next morning and had me walk her throught the Apple online store and order a new 20" iMac back in November (ish).
Her husband didn't have a say in it this time.

She has now "sold" two friends on buying Macs...

I finally decided it wasn't worth it. My father-in-law is a very novice user, but he did happen to make a boatload of money on MSFT stock. He used to laugh at my interest in Macs, but he long ago conceded that I do all sorts of amazing things on my computer, while he mainly just "runs" Quicken and a few Excel spreadsheets.

This time, he actually did consider a Mac, but I knew he'd never go through with it, and I'm kind of glad he didn't. At least I didn't push him toward it. He's very set in his ways, and I honestly couldn't deal with him having any Mac-related issues. Somehow, I think he's better off just muddling through on his own. I helped him sort through a few HP setups, and he went with one of those.

datbeme, there are tens of thousands of people with money who continue to put up with POS cars who could simply write a check for a new one. Some people defy common sense.

It's not like switching a computer platform is a life-long decision.
