Windows XP - reinstall & archive question
Posted by: lafinfil

Sorry - two windows questions in one day.

Trying to help out my brother in law because the Dell "help desk" has him all screwed up now.

Newer Dell ( about a year old) Running slow, missing applications etc ... all in the last day
He though it was related to the WD USB drive (my earlier post) but that's solved.

In the mean time, Dell help had him change a bunch of stuff making it worse.
Gave him the sage "reinstall" advice

Going back to previous system (or whatever dell calls it) doesn't help

Is there an equivalent to an archive & install from the restore disk ?
New system but leaving all the doc's, preferences, network settings etc ... in place

FWIW - it sounds like a directory problem to me. He has run the windows tools included in the OS
but that hasn't helped - other than telling him there was a problem

Thanks again

You're not so much asking for XP advice but Dell OS advice...

... as it completely depends on what the provided Dell discs allow you to do.

I have had restore disks that give you a choice and check list. Don't know what DELL allows. But better than days of down time just copy your docs and reinstall all. Your brother doesn't know if some of those things he wants to save have been screwed up and he will be right back in the pokey even just installing the XP OS.

Do you have registry mechanic?

Now that I think about it - he also has a full retail set of disks

I had him on a 20" iMac that we had Parallels running on.

He got frustrated after a month because of the lack of Parallels / Windows support.

I'm guessing it doesn't look so bad now

If you have a full set of retail disks (and do not mind using up the serial #) you can just reinstall windows.

Be aware that a full reinstall will wipe the My Documents folders - so you need to back up anything in there (like photos, music, documents, etc).

Thanks ADent

He has everything backed up right now.

Still trying to avoid a full install but it's not looking good right now.
