which log to check?

intermittently, shut down goes on for minutes and mostly won't shutdown without force.
I've been checking the Console logs, but there seems to be nothing of significance.
I assume I should be checking the system logs as mostly I don't shut down until I quit all apps (other then background ones) except Finder?

Which logs? >> console.log and system.log. Be aware that if you force a shut down those logs won't be complete.

Which OS are you on, and do you in fact have background processes going on, particularly form 3rd-party apps?

yes, that much I figured.
10.5.1

quicksilver
palm - doesn't help that this shiznit is PPC and they haven't updated....
but when I get my iPhone...

typeit4me
dashboad kickstart
TWAINbridge - which I think may be the culprit from some logs I've read that were complete. but there's no update to it that I can find. I believe it to be part of the stuff for my Canon Pixma printer.
and Eudora is PPC as well, which as much as I like it, may get the boot when the iPhone comes, or if by miracle Odysseus appears.

If it helps at all, for me 10.5.1 took a long time to complete shutdowns.

Any particular reason you don't want be current with 10.5.4?
