OT: Gold nanoparticles color differences

Ok, this may challenge this Mac group...

I understand that gold nanoparticles are different colors depending on the size of the nanoparticle. I'm trying to understand why this occurs in terms I can understand. I've run across terms such as, "surface plasmon oscillation," etc.--these make my eyes glaze over.

Anybody have an easy-to-understand explanation?

"surface plasmon oscillation" - until now, I've never run across such a term! LOL. And I'm with ya on the eyes glazing over thing.

probably something to do with the various wavelengths of light not ahving enough room to get reflected back. The longer ones aren't hitting the surface so those colors are gone.
