I'm fairly new to InDesign, but this seemed straightforward enough. I have a frame with a half-point keyline containing a TIFF photo that extends a couple of picas beyond the frame. Everything looks fine in InDesign, but in the exported PDF the photo extends a couple of points below the keyline. The printer thinks he can fix it, which is good, because I'm at a loss for what I can do differently in InDesign:

Have you printed the PDF and seen the same thing happening? Also, open the PDF in Illustrator and see if the photo still extends beyond the keyline. Acrobat still has some on-screen rendering glitches that don't necessarily print out.

What is your display performance set to in ID? If its set to the middle default I have had occurrences where the screen is rendered incorrectly. Bumping it up to the high res preview I can then see where it is messed up and correct it.

What version of InDesign are you using? How did you create the keyline? A stroke applied to the photo? A rectangle drawn to the size of the photo? A rectangle with the photo pasted into it? Something else?

what setting are you exporting the pdf in?

I have found that pdf's have all kind of visual errors onscreen that are not actually in the file. This is one of the reasons that I do not send print ready PDF's for most projects.

Heres a novel idea, send them the native files.

It's InDesign CS3. The keyline is simply a stroke on the frame. InDesign display performance is High Quality, but I'm baffled as to what I would adjust or change about the InDesign frame not containing the object it supposedly encloses. I'm exporting the PDF as High Quality Print. It's my printer who called my attention to this problem, but I don't know if that's from reviewing it on screen or on paper. Rasterizing the PDF page in Photoshop shows the same problem, so it's apparently in the PDF not just my onscreen viewing of the PDF.

Try and distill the file as an X1:a PDF. And don't send native files. No one wants to deal with keeping track of all the fonts, pictures, etc.

You are so wrong. That is the printers job, to manage the files. What do you think would cost you less: The printer trying to solve your problem on a flattened PDF or just adjusting the box in the native file?

Package the files using the utility in ID. Zip the file and send the native files.

If the printer does not want to take the time to work with native files, then I find a new printer. Always remember they are your vendor, not the other way around.

Au contraire. Most of the printers I release InDesign projects to prefer to receive
InDesign packages, e.g. with native files, links and fonts. This is true especially with
the larger projects I work one like annual reports.

But what, exactly, can be adjusted in the native file?

The idea that native files are LESS troubleprone than a wrapped-up PDF is rather laughable. I may be new to InDesign, but I've been sending publications to the printer for 35 years, including the last 20 with PageMaker.

They may not be less troubleprone, but they are more editable. I can't begin to count
the number of times clients have required last minute revisions on documents while
at the printer before going to press which would be difficult to make in a pdf file. This is
not necessarily relevant to the error you are encountering, Mr Downtown.

FWIW for all the years I've worked with InDesign, I've never seen a placed image spill
beyond the boundary of the frame it's placed in. Have you inquired over at Adobe's
InDesign/Mac user forum?

your error is a PDF error. I have told you how to solve the problem, what you do with that information is up to you.

Are you guys saying that you let the printers mess with your designs?

Even let the printer make actual changes (not fixes) to your designs?

Personally I think this is madness.

No, we're talking perhaps minor text changes or a swatch change, all of which gets
signed off by a designer on press or by designers/production people such as myself
back in the office reviewing PDF proofs updated to reflect the changes. Or perhaps
with a complicated folding piece with a diecut, an adjustment (usually nudges) to
folds or cuts.

If it was more than that, it would come back to us. And all is verified to death.
We're not talking about rinky dink printers we're unfamiliar with either. If this was
madness, we would have stopped doing it a long long time ago.

Of course, I've also sent out countless PDF files as final art for projects. It all
depends.
