extracting a piece out of a DVD

I've got a friend who is trying to extract some footage from a DVD he made awhile back. Whats the best way to get the DVD movie into a format that he can import into imovie or quicktime so he can clip out what he needs and reburn to DVD?

Handbrake. Edit in Quicktime.

If the DVD has chapters you can even select just the chapter you need in the importing process.

if it is a disc he made, you can use mpegstreamclip to edit the VOB file and re-save in the same format..this way he doesn't have to re-encode...

If you don't mind paying a few bucks...Cinematize is a great program - been using it for years. They just released a long-awaited, updated version too.

I agree with pixelzombie. I use mpegstreamclip for these kind of things.

If you don't want to edit the VOB directly, you can convert to AIC or another lightly compressed format to edit in your choice of movie editor.
