Deciding on a new laptop: Help me pick the reasonable one!
Posted by: microchip
Date: July 07, 2008 10:22PM
I sold my Vaio, 600Mhz Celeron with a 12 GB HD and 64MB of ram because it was too slow to use for everyday tasks.

Now, I'm searching for another one....
I'm between an IBM X30 and a Toshiba Protege 2000.

The IBM is the practical answer; going for a little over $200 on eBay, 1.2 Ghz P3, 30 GB Hard drive; but it's big. It's thick. It's almost 3cm tall.

The Toshiba is thin. Sure, it has a smaller hard drive and a slower processor. But it's thin, and light....

So....Steer me!

What are you using it for?

And where?

I want to do internet, email, maybe some iTunes. DVD_TS playback, viewing pictures taken from and controlling my Nikon D50, also programming for my arduino.

Don't get me wrong. I would love to get a Mac. Love to, however for $200 I'd land myself looking at a Pismo, which honestly doesn't hold that much significance or implied use to me as it does to you guys who were around during OS9 days.

EDIT: If it's any consolation, I'll be running Linux anyway.

Or, how about this, if you want to give me the money for a MacBook, then I'll go buy one, other than that, if any of you want to offer some further insight into my computer purchase, that'd be fabulous.

Okay, you're forgiven.

Believe me, I understand the financial aspect all too well.

And watch it with the "you guys who were around in OS9 days" stuff. It wasn't THAT long ago.

Geez.

Sorry, but X is the only thing that got me interested in a Mac for real.

I would go IBM. But it doesn't sound to me like portability is a huge concern.

Portability is a concern, but so is usability. It's a trade off that I can't decide.

Do you have a Mac? I'm asking because you can do all those things on a Mac. No kidding.

I'll be running Linux anyway

You can do that on a Mac too.

I have a Powermac. It's a bit of a pain to lug the Powermac around.

I'm sure this is all in good humor, and I'll admit I am laughing, but I'm still not getting anywhere in deciding within my limits. ;)

Sounds like price is the main concern. Go set a tent up in front of Best Buy so you're first in line for the inevitable $100 laptop Black Friday sale.

A few years ago it seemed like you were always throwing large amounts of money around.
What happened?
Thought you had a macbook at some point?

You know...there was a day when asking about buying a PC on this or the other Mac forums would cause members to show their venomous teeth. Now we see this all the time. Hell, I've asked PC related questions myself. Times sure have changed.

And now matter how hard I scrub; I just don't feel clean.

I'd buy the IBM--the small difference in portability takes a back seat to usability.

If you would be willing to pay a little more, I have seen closeout sales of 1.6 GHz to 1.7 GHz Core 2 Duo laptops for sale at $399 at different stores three times this month. They should be able to run OS X too with a little work.

Thanks!

I got a 14" iBook G4 for less than $200. A collector wanted my LC 580. We swapped. Cost about $90 to ship the LC 580. iBook had a dead hard drive so another $85 for replacement drive. Worth the work. Perfect testing computer. Battery even works for about 2 or three hours.

Nothing wrong with Linux. Many find distributions. I prefer Ubuntu at the moment. DSL is also pretty nice on older systems.

I like ThinkPads. I doubt you choose poorly. And what is it, 3.5lbs? Not really a big machine at all.
