Saw someone using a Mac Mini and LCD display at his Starbux table

I went to my local Starbucks after lunch, and was amazed to see a patron sitting
at a table using not a laptop but a full-fledged Mac Mini setup, complete with a
17" Samsung LCD desktop display, an Apple extended keyboard of recent vintage,
a Mighty Mouse and what looked like an OWC Mercury Elite external drive. He
apparently had shlepped his Mini and peripherals there on a small luggage cart,
which sat on the floor next to him.

I guess any computer can be portable if you set your mind to it.

Hey- I used to take my Mac Plus around in a bag that was designed for it.

I'm reminded of the "Crankshaft" cartoon when the title character dragged his Windows desktop setup to the park to use the 'free community internet'.

For what they charge, you might as well use up as much space as you can.

Used to take my iMac (17" G5) to a local coffee shop. With the iLugger, it was pretty painless. Save, of course, for the stares and laughter.

Why would people laugh? HP has a freaking 20" "notebook" now.

Did you look at the features/specs for that beast? 15.5 lbs., and a swivel for the screen, much like the swivel on the Intel iMac... Crazy!

The base config. is still cheaper than a MacBook Pro. That's even crazier!

If you can pick it up and carry it; it's portable.

I used to pack up a Bondi iMac and take him home with me to South Dakota over the holidays back in 1998. Before I had a laptop. It came with a convenient carrying handle.

At least that was an all-in-one unit (more or less- of course there is a keyboard and mouse).

For that matter Apple's towers have had carrying handles for years, since the days of the
Blue and White G3.

I used to have one of those bags too, I toted around my SE/30 and all it's support bits. These bags were way cool back then because even though the Plus form factor was larger than a breadbox (but smaller than the Empire State bldg) it was still portable computing. Besides, chicks dig geeky guys that lug computers in a bag! This was all before Blackberries, cell phones and laptops so think easily impressed women. smoking smiley

Ah memories. I still have the bag that my dad used to carry his Mac Plus back-and-forth to work in.

I use my Mac Plus bag all the time to cart extra cables, odds & ends, etc. along with me while visiting clients.

The sociologist, and historian, Adam Ferguson described the phenomenon of spontaneous order in society as the "result of human action, but not the execution of any human design".

I had a Mac Plus, external HD, second floppy, and surge protector set up in a milk crate and cut a little slot in the crate to get access to the internal floppy drive.

Luggable, not exactly portable, but it worked well between the sailboat I lived on and the Navy ship I worked on for three years.
