How fast do you type?

Speeds are probably much faster on a computer than on a typewriter (remember those?).

If you've used both, I'd be interested in knowing how they compared.

I don't type particularly fast, and sometimes use my Tactle Pro keyboard to sound like I'm fast and furious. My girlfriend hits about 120, no errors. I heard one of the Macworld magazine staff say that he has been clocked at about 120 as well.

That seems to be a rarefied atmosphere, at least to me.

I thought I read somewhere that a/the national record was 126wpm, but don't know who certified that, if it still stands, or even if it was on a keyboard or typewriter.

48 wpm just now, but I'd bet we are all faster when typing things that we are composing rather than copying something.

I only have vague memories of my old Selectric typewriter that I wrote my MA thesis on; my dissertation was an early word processing document at my university. I had to type it in at the user center and then walk across campus to the printer center to get the output.

i thought court reporters could get above 200 words a minute... but they have those little units that are totally different from our intended-to-slow-you-down qwerty keyboards.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 to 50 wpm on a good computer keyboard.

I haven't tried to clock myself on this thin Apple USB keyboard (new type). Sometimes I think the chicklet keys are speedy. Other times I think they are are slower than the old ADB Extended Keyboard or cause me to make more mistakes.

Right about there device. I don't know that you can compare the WPM since their stuff has to be transcribed at some point.

'fil, you crack me up!

Michael, the difference between copying and composing didn't occur to me. Good point.

IronMac, I *wish* my TP keyboard kept me from getting better than 100wpm.

I don't use all my fingers because I learned to type before I had a class.

One agency I worked at had the time-test via paper retype on the computer, because
they also did temp placement. I tried that and got 63 wpm, 2 errors, 59, no errors.

That was looking at the paper and having to reproduce it.

Just typing off the top of my head I'm around 100.

Ok. It's 35 wpm with no errors. After that I'd beat 'fil in speed at errors.

SoCal for now.

57 wpm with no errors but i did the test 3 times. (slow day so any excuse to procrastinate!)

i never really thought keyboards made a significant difference but this Macally keyboard really is quite clunky. never thought about it much since none of my work is speed critical.

Net Speed: 88 WPM
Accuracy: 94%
Gross Speed: 93 WPM

81 with 98% accuracy.

Or 42 wpm the first time when I just stared at the page for 12 second trying to decide whether I was supposed to type the title or just the body text. smiling smiley

BTW, Camino didn't like that Java very well. Safari was fine.

I'm probably around 40-50wpm on a computer. I was a lowly 35wpm or so on the lovely mauve IBM ball Selectric I spent so many years in front of throughout school. When I'm composing material from scratch, and I manage to stop thinking about typing (the thing that probably slows me down the most), I might crack the 60wpm barrier on occasion.

I have an aunt who was a secretary for forty years and she could blaze along at 90-100wpm, error free (All those years dealing with carbon paper, erasers and then White-Out did wonders for her accuracy), all while she handled a switchboard, ate her lunch and clucked over the soap opera plots with her neighbor. Then there's Harlan Ellison who claims to type 120wpm, and he's a two finger typist. I've seen him at the the keyboard, a fairly old manual number, and he just may not be fibbing.

As for court reporters, if I understand right, not only do they use a special keyboard, they type using a form of shorthand too. They make pretty good money, and I can see why.

How interesting... I was Googling for typing speeds, and I found one site where people were actually comparing their speeds in terms of key strokes per minute! What, exactly, is the value of that? I was absolutely amazed at those numbers I saw, until I realized what they were talking about.

Years ago I could maintain 80wpm for 15 minutes, and that was on an old manual typewriter. My hands are so bad now that I wouldn't even dare try a typing test.

According to what I could find, the world record - according to Guinness - is 150 words per minute for 50 minutes, and the woman did 170 wpm using the Dvorak keyboard, with up to 212wpm for short bursts. She flunked typing in high school. And, she also starred in a commercial for the Apple IIc, which had the switchable keyboard.

I suspect you'll find all kinds of variations. And claims. Which, conveniently, can't be substantiated. smiling smiley
