250GB FireLite Portable FireWire HD (bus powered) - $100

Deal at MicroCenter starts tomorrow - that's $40 off the regular price. Limited quantities and may not be available online so if you have a MC nearby and want to pick up a drive or two or three do it today and take advantage of their 30-day price protection...

5400 RPM
3.3 x 5.1 x 0.7 in./8.38 x 12.95 x 1.78 cm
6.35 oz./180.0 g
Two 6-pin FireWire 400 ports
1-yr warranty

You can find USB2 drives at this price (or cheaper) but I still prefer firewire, especially for bus-powered drives - in my experience it is faster and more reliable.

Great price -- a few years back I paid $160 for the 60 GB version I picked up off of the clearance table at my local AS.

It is what it is.

For people that don't live near a MicroCenter, Best Buy also sells this drive in both the 250 and 320GB version. When they have a sale I have seen the 250 GB version for under $100.

Are you sure it was the FireWire version? There is a virtually identical USB Firelite as well...

I've handled one of those in-store and was impressed - it was nicely built.

So was the woman who unlocked the case....

Best Buy carries the Smart Disk Drive by Verbatim, which has the advantage of both USB and Firewire connections. When it goes on sale it is usually $50 off for each of the drives.

Not rave reviews for the USB side OR the temp.

Drive is dead a week later 05/16/2008

Pros: Western Digital Drive, Firewire AND USB, SATA

needs more power 04/11/2008

Cons: needed power from a second usb port

"I just bought the Verbatim External USB 2.0 portable hard drive and my laptop did not "see" that it was plugged in. I checked the Verbatim web site and learned that some (not all) laptops do not supply sufficient power from a single USB port to power their hard drive. Verbatim's suggestion was for me to buy a "Y-USB" plug so that I could obtain power from the hard drive from two USB ports."

I have the 250GB version attached via firewire and have had no problems with the drive. Verbatim probably uses the same 5400 RPM drive in both models.

I wouldn't let the negative reviews deter anyone from buying one. A small portion of all drives are defective out of the box. If this happens they can just be exchanged for another one. In the second review the drive comes with a Y-USB plug in the package, so I am not sure what the reviewer was complaining about?
