Too bad about that Winders thingie. As to the rest of it, it is a pleasantly shaped box on a stand that holds standard electronic components. So what.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Looks great - I love the idea of bamboo exterior, but not for $150.

But overall, I'd say this is he best Dell answer to a mac product ever.

nice, add $70 for wireless, ouch -- built in X3100 video

configured with a 2.1, 4 gigs ram, so-so 24" monitor and wireless = $1500 -- about $100 less than a 2.8 24" iMac (after rebate) or $100 more than a refurb 24" 2.4 iMac

I think it's a really sexy design. Especially with the bamboo, it has a mid-century modern feel. I also prefer the vertical orientation to that of the horizontal Mac Mini, as it uses less space.

Now if it would run OS X; you might have a hit.

I'm surprised at the positive response. I find it rather tacky. Also, how the heck can a PC be "conscientious "?

I've been found out. ka jowct clued in to my cleverly-steered thread direction, which was a secret test at persuasion. The Dell is really crap. Now then, resume the hate.

Also, this uses the lesser Pentium Dual Core, not the Core 2 Duo.

The Core 2 Duo version starts at $874, which places it directly in the mini's pricing sight.

by my math, it's $549 for a 2.0 C2D like in the $799 mini.

yup.

to get it to $769 i could add 4 gigs ram ($100) -- and dont forget wireless, $70 extra = $769. Dont need wireless? add 320 gig drive for $100 = $799

:::sigh::: I must be getting tired here at work. I looked at the second bundle column, the $874 includes a monitor.

If you're afraid of it tipping over, you can change the orientation so it sits on the broad dimension.

It's a nice unit, with a very nice design, at a reasonable price. If it was Apple badged and hyped as the new Mac mini, the macmacs would be filling their drool cups to overflowing.

Of course, within a couple of weeks there'd probably be outraged threads about the bamboo case warping or something. tongue sticking out smiley

The top-of-the-line version would make a pretty smoking HTPC, if a pricey one. Don't see any sign of a built-in IR port, though.

I think it's rather cool looking. I'd like a red one.
Who needs it to be wireless? Plug it into a router.

You can order it with a Blu-Ray drive. Where is the Mac that can play those yet? The only Apple product with HDMI is the Apple TV.

Now picture it with all those cables coming out the back in mid-air.

Plus:
- no remote
- digital audio for out only
- only 4-pin FireWire
- no Bluetooth
- optional WiFi
- significantly larger than the mini

- no iLife

LOL, that's what people said about the pedestal iMacs. Cracks me up.

It's not bad looking, but I don't like vertical mounting for an optical drive. All of the PCs I've seen with a few miles on the clock beat up the disks.

$799 for 2Ghz Core 2 Duo and Blu-Ray, 40 GB larger HD. If only it could run OS X.

I could live with an external drive case that looked like that, but it would have to be dirt cheap. It's cheesy.

But not as bad as the computer case I see in the window of the little computer upgrade and repair store nearby on Ave. B. That one just screams "Horny Teenage Boy Whose Best Friend is His Avatar".

It's too expensive--when configured as closely as possible to the Mac mini 2.0 GHz, the Dell costs $911.00 vs. $799 for the mini.

Re: AA's setup

+1 for the KB & Mouse
-1 for no Bluetooth option

A pretty close fit for >$100 more. Still a pretty good design by Dell (though the comment about the vertical cabling is *right on*). We'll see how many they sell.

It appears Dell copied Apple too closely, including what I consider to be a fault of the mini's: room for only a 2.5" laptop drive.
