Make sure it works...
And make sure you have at least two people to LIFT it.

A spare toner cartridge is highly recommended.. they're not easy to come by, and they're still pretty spendy!

Worth picking one up? I know they are heavy and big, but they can print 11x17 plus. It still kills me that the school I volunteered at and help fix up their macs threw two of them in the dumpster when I wasn't there.

Ouch.. they just dumped 'em huh?

I think they're a pretty decent printer.. but I've only personally seen and printed to one.

If you need 11x17 printing, I currently have a HP Laserjet 5SI MX that I can recommend.

HUGE beast.. bring TWO friends to help you move one.
Two paper trays, manual feed tray, toner cartridge big enough to park a volkswagon in, RAM expandable, PostScript.... and rated for about a bajillion pages a month.

I really like mine.
Well, except for the size... it's enormous.

Also widely available on the used market.. but becuase of the size and weight, I recommend finding one LOCALLY unless you find an eBay deal that says "free shipping".

Hope this helps!

We have had an HP 5000N for years. Wonderful machine, 1200 DPI, Postscript, and prints 11 by 17. Very trouble free. You might be able to lift it yourself if you play defensive line.

I think the 5000N is the model (or one of them?) that followed the 5si in that line... in fact, I think many of the parts are the same (pretty sure the duplex unit is).

I forgot to mention that the 5si (and 5000N I think) can both use a duplexer to print double sided on 11x17 or letter/legal size.

It's NICE to be able to proof my monthly newletter on 11x17, double sided!

I can lift my Hewlett Packard HP4MV tabloid printer by myself. Been giving me great service for many years.

My former lab picked up one for cheap. it was huge and heavy... However, it got me through writing my thesis, so I am thankful. Unfortunately, some dumb fool in my lab try to feed a recycled plastic envelope through it, and it melted going thru it. It was not quite the same after... sigh...
