You only have to power it down for 5 seconds.

Just to humor you Pam, I unplugged it for a whole minute, and even unscrewed the coax. The IP address stayed the same.

I though there was an app or utility that forced a modem to renew it lease or something like that, which flushed the IP address and forced it to be assigned a new one from the provider's network.

ken, I can't send any e-mails from the home office to my work, as their e-mail system thinks my IP belongs to a spammer.

As far as I know, no matter how many times you reset your modem with Scumcast, you are still going to pick up the same IP#, unless something breaks down with their system and they switch you off to another node for repairs. I think I have only had two IP#s over the last 3 or 4 years, and the only reason I got the second one was because I had been on an old leg of legacy cable and they replaced it and moved me to a new node on a different router.

Any chance you could proxy up at one of the anonymous proxy sites as a temp fix?

I may need to do that. It only is an issue if I need to e-mail to one of the people at work.

What are some of the proxy sites? I know of them, but have no idea who they are.

How about hooking up a different computer? I've tried it in the past and it has worked.
Not always though.

I think this was discussed at length on a G4 mailing list
through LowendMac some time ago and no one ever came up with a
real solution. It would nice if you could.

Yea, their 'dynamic ip's' are both a blessing, and a horror.

On the upside, I've had the same IP for 3 years.

I havn't hit any downsides yet.

There's no "fast and easy way," but there is a very reliable way.

Using the web-interface, release the DHCP IP address on your router before you go to work in the morning (if you have no cable modem router, just shut down your computer).

When you come back that evening, renew the IP address (or start up your computer). You'll get a new address.

The way that it works is if you're not using that IP address during working hours your address will likely get picked up by another cable modem (new cable modems mostly go online during working hours). Then when you request a DHCP address later, the local router simply issues you the next free address.

Please do not use this trick to try and sneak past the forum mods here or at DM.

No, I would never do that, seriously. If I get banned, I will abide by it.

I didn't realize that it took them that long (hours) to assign a new IP address when you drop off the grid.

I believe it's because the allocation table is cached. It could take quite some time for the cache to update.

In my experience, it has never taken less than 1/2 hour and often takes 2-3 hours offline to get a new address.

It's easiest to leave it when you're going away for awhile.

It usually takes me about 5 hours to get a new IP with TWC RoadRunner.

Don't ask me why I know this.

Use a webmail service---they may not be blocked--or even try comcast webmail--it may use a different IP

RacerX, I posted a reply to this in the other place. You might find it helpful. I hope it is.
