Anyone using refill kits?

Drill your own hole or using made-to-refill cartridges?

The last one I use to refill the tanks for my Canon iP4300 came with large needles on the ink syringes. It was easy to poke a hole where the instructions said I should. I refilled the color tanks at least 3 times each then found a deal on generic tanks that required me to reuse the chips from the original cartridges.

I did some research on the series of tubes we call the interwebs.
The 3 refill kits I looked at didn't seem to be a significant savings over buying ready made carts from my regular supplier for my Canon & Brother, Ink & Beyond.
Added plus, I don't have to mess with refilling them.
Then only bad things about not refilling, is the environmental cost.
I think the parts of the carts are recyclable, but that would mean slicing them up and extracting the sponge and chip, very dirty work.
