Not sure of the "legality" of this website. . .

Classic Cat is a directory with links to over 2800 free to download classical performances on the internet, sorted by composer and work.

How to navigate this site

1. Select a composer
2. Select a work
3. Go to the mp3 section
4. Click a button

After clicking the button you are transported to the page of the musician(s) where you can download the music. Read more..

The vast majority of classical has no copyright.

The performance of it can be protected, but there are many sites, such as one of the prime MIDI sites, where you can download someone's performance in MIDI for free - and use your computer or a synth to play it back (or QuickTime sounds, etc.)

One who chooses to let their performance go for free has that right. If they are performances on some record label, then that performance has some obvious interests in not having you download for free (as if we haven't heard enough from those people!!).

I haven't looked at your link yet - but that is the general rule for ancient music. Sort of like books on the Gutenberg project. You could print a book that is free of copyright restrictions, but you'd have to pay to have the book printed, of course, and then sell it yourself. OR you can just download the text for reading.

And you've already posted some audio books of this nature as well - volunteer readers (even celebs) who read to make the stuff available.

Classics, of course. Not The DaVinci STOLEN Code.

Yeah Baby!

Johann Pachelbel "Canon in D" one of my favorite pieces. Man
the Cello version was a little tough to get but I'm already a
member at Garageband.com. Some of these are hosted all over the place
but still worth it. Some of those sites are really a pain but
still worth it. I've already picked up 5 different versions
of Canon in D

Thanks Newton!

There's a large collection on this one page alone and they're high 255kbps bitrate, well some of them anyway.

Peabody Symphony Orchestra
Hajime Teri Murai, Music Director

Please note: You are welcome to download these selected MP3
files of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra recorded live in
concert for your own personal enjoyment, however, copying or
redistributing these files without prior written permission is
strictly prohibited. Since some of the files are quite large,
the use of a broadband Internet connection is highly recommended.

Thanks again, Newton. Wouldn't have found it without you.

Classical and MP3 aren't a good combination.

Well if you have Meniere's Diease, half deaf in one
ear and a constant ringing to boot it doesn't matter too much.
I'm just a music lover, it doesn't have to be perfect. Those
coming through at 255kbps aren't too bad to anyones ears. I'm
still hanging onto my vinyl you never know when they might
come up with a cure for this crap.

Good enough for the speakers here at work, that's for sure.
