I don't think that Rachael Ray belongs on that list. She's a 'tv personality," not a chef.

The category is "celebrity (TV) chef", not chef or professional cook.
There are quite a few celebrity chefs who are not "professional" chefs.

It's TV, it's not real.
Neither are the reality shows. It's TV.

No, there aren't. A chef is a professional cook. By definition.

She became famous for shows about EATING, not for cooking. Demonstrating 30-minute recipes on tv when someone else hands you the recipe and talking points does not qualify. Featuring a cooking segment on a variety/talk show does not qualify. If you're not a professional cook then you're not a chef.

I have nothing against her. I enjoy most of her shows. But she's not a chef.

One more time.
<<chef>>
<<celebrity chef>>

they are not the same.

TV is not real.

Rachel Ray (and many others) do not belong on a <chef> or <professional chef> list.
The OP made that distinction with quotes.

Whether you put "celebrity" in front of it or not, that doesn't matter.

It's improper use of the word "chef."

The others on that list are actual chefs. She is not. The people who made the list don't care, but the general public should not eat that offal just because someone's serving it.

Have some appreciation for language.

. . .just an FYI but the description says that Mario Batali has no formal cooking training as well. . . and I thought I saw a Chefography of Paula Deen. . .and I think she learned to cook herself (don't quote me on this though). . .

I agree.

There are chefs that are celebrities, and there are those that are not.

There are celebrities that are chefs, and those that are not. Ray is in the latter of these categories.

It may be a small matter to most, but I think it diminishes the title to include Ray (and Batli) in any category whose title includes the word "chef". Except maybe with the suffix "Pretend" or "Almost".

Celebrity Cook- I'd buy that for a dollar.

Ok, I admit if Ray had big tits, I'd declare MacMagus a raving loon.

Until then...

Newt, Paula Deen began her career as a caterer, owned her own restaurant and published a few cook books before her show was picked up. Mario Batali has been working in kitchens since his late teens and became popular from his time as chef at the Four Seasons.

Both are professional cooks AND celebrities.

Who knew, Velveeta, Spam, canned chili, canned soup, and those other 1950's housewife shortcut recipes she borrows and spins could get her so far.

Paula Deen's restaurant is terrible. My mother cooks better in her sleep.

There's no difference between <car> and <smashed car>> then, by your definition.

It's Hollywood
They coined the phrase. It has stuck. That's the context.
I'd prefer <entertainer>, but one could argue the validity of that, too. :-)

Did you flunk your SAT's?

"smashed car" is to "car" as Rachael Ray is to...

a. chef
b. celebrity

(Hint: the answer isn't "chef.")
