FTP app recommendation?
Posted by: Black Landlord

I tried a bunch and sort of settled on Cyberduck, but it has a persistent problem in that the first upload always freezes half way, and there's no way to delete it without quitting the program and starting up again. There was anotherthread from someone with the same problem a while back but no resolution.
What's your favorite upload app?
Thanks!

(PS would prefer to upload directly from Dreamweaver but it quits unexpectedly most of the time when accessing web space).

Have you tried the OSX built in ftp?

Open a finder window.
From the Go Menu select Connect to server
When the window opens enter the server address as: ftp:/username@domainname.com
It will then authenticate you.

I find it works well for uploading and downloading and is completely intuitive since it mounts as another volume in the finder.

Transmit...I used Cyberduck then realized that it sort of knew which transfers were important and hung on those.

-50 "unknown error". . . thanks though, it seemed promising.

Interarchy.

Slowly Transmit is copying Interarchy's features. Thus far they tend to stay about 3-5 years behind Interarchy.

try: ftp:/username:password@domainname.com/public_html

Make sure you are using 2 forward slashes after ftp: I have to leave one out so that the url doesn't autoformat.

Transmit.

BTW, historically the FTP built in to the Finder does not allow you to upload, only download in most versions of the OS. I'm guessing they only added upload in Leopard (if in fact it even works in Leopard).

On the other hand, the Unix FTP client in Terminal has always worked but most people prefer a GUI.

Er, OK, I tried following your instructions for entering my info;
I entered my password successfully, a window opened with my webspace, everything looked fine, but it's locked and can't be modified.

$29 for Transit and $59 for Interarchy.
I can work around the Cyberduck problem by uploading a small junk file first, but the "Go" solution seems promising.
How do I modify the remote folder so it can be written to?
Thx.

Yep, and Interarchy is worth at least $30 more than transmit.

RBrowser is good too. Very similar to Transmit.

Those of you who haven't seen the Univ of Michigan's FUGU.app should take a look. It's free, and the Mac interface is quite "pure" in appearance and drag/drop functionality.

I use FUGU exclusively since the university requires us to use SFTP instead of FTP and it is the app that they officially support. The interface is sparse or "pure" as Jimmypoo puts it, but it has done all that I needed it to for submitting and retrieving files from campus.

Plus the logo is cool.

Thanks for your earlier help in this thread.
Trying Fubu, but:
Can't figure out what format to enter in the "Connect To" window including the ones you mentioned above for the finder-- can't find anything that lets me in. The "help" is of no help.

Transmit, Cyberduck, Fugu.
All work pretty great for me.
I use all three and have never had the issue you have in CyDuck.

BTW, I ONLY use SECURE FTP anymore.
(I believe CDuck and FUGU use scp for batch transfers, not sure with Transmit.)
Maybe that would remedy your issue with Cyberduck?
Maybe it's an issue with your server?

I'm sure Interachy is as great as people say, but I'm not about to pay $60 for an FTP client to find out.

Have you tried FireFTP?
[fireftp.mozdev.org]

Free addon for FIrefox.

I'm still using Fetch; got a serial with one of those shareware bundle deals.

Why won't Dreamweaver's FTP work? That would seem the easiest...

Thanks- that's the exact same info as in the help file.
The example there is "hobbit.staff".
How does that translate to entering a remote server on the web?

You can always use the demo. One of the things I like is that you can connect via SSH in the GUI. And then many of the commands are done via SSH. So things like copy, move, duplicate... it'll even do server to server transfers from one server to another without having to download it locally first.

I do, thanks, but it doesn't work. Mostly get some sort of port error.

I wonder if your Mac's own firewall is causing some issue?

Looks like I guessed wrong. No upload in Leopard either.

Port should almost always be 22.
