Look at the pool- no blacks. Even the swimmers from Zimbabwe and South Africa are white

I was talking to a friend and we figured out that the reason is that a pair of running shoes is cheaper than than a country club membership.

I haven't seen it, but the steeplechase race usually consists mostly of white guys. And the long distance races tend to be dominated be central Africans.

I would love to see a statistical analysis of this done across the Olympics, looking at race/nationality of entrants and of medalists for all sports. It would be fascinating to see the trends.

I was of the impression that some athletes went "country shopping" to insure they would appear in the Olympics ala the Jamaican Bob Sled Team.

Jimmy the Greek was correct in his anatomical analysis of the black athlete..the one that cost him career.

My son plays high level baseball on a white and puerto rican team.

A number of years ago, when they were 13-14, we played a mostly black inner city team for the first time. The kids on his team were shaking their heads in amazement at the speed on the basepaths...These guys were swiping bases like they were gifts. We usually won these games because the baseball they were playing wasn't up to snuff hitting and pitching wise but...when they got on base these kids ran at will.

I ran fast, but I really ran fast when the Crips were chasing me.

I do not agree. I am white. I was totally amazed by the 100m final. I happen to notice there was no white in it. Is the "black" race better that the "white" race when it comes to running? Maybe. I don't know. But certainly in this Olympiad, they managed to send 8 of their top athletes to run for the 100m final, when us, the whites, sent none. On the other hand the opposite happened at the pool. So what.

Again, I was totally amazed by the race and I admire those 8 athletes, yes, even the one that finished on the 8th place. I wish I could run 1/2 as fast.

The fact that it mattered enough to be the title of your thread? That it's "their" athletes and "us, the whites"? Not such good signals.

I *totally* believe you don't hold any animosity. But racism extends beyond the morons with sheets over their heads or dragging people to death behind their pick up. Cultural racism can be the toughest thing for everybody to deal with because sometimes it takes the form of stuff we "just know" that seems harmless enough, but can end up forming barriers, conscious and unconscious, even between good people.

Caucasians are only allowed to "celebrate" the difference between cultures, not make factually accurate statements which use race as a basis.

I remember an old interview David Letterman did with Michael Jordan.
The Air Jordan sneaker had just come out. Apparently, NIKE had some
issues with the red/black color scheme of the shoe design.

Letterman: "So what was NIKE's problem with the color?"
Jordan: "They said it doesn't have enough white in it".
Letterman: "Well, neither does the NBA."

This makes no sense at all. Jimmy the Greek was blathering about slave owners in the United States breeding black men to be bigger and stronger. What the hell does that have to do with athletes from non-US countries?

Do a little reading. Slave breeding is fact, not fiction.

Slaves were regularly sold as breeding stock. When the shipment of human beings was halted it was rampant and many slave owners/dealers had requirements for the numbers of children that their so called, "prize" women and men produced. They also sold women and men as good breeding stock based on strength, body type etc.

BUT these Olympic athletes ARE NOT DESCENDED FROM SLAVES.

Or did you not know that the Olympics are INTERNATIONAL?

Stevie...offhanded comment about Jimmy, my apologies. What he said was basically true in segments and quite a few agreed...

He was a clutz, a drunk, a buffoon.

Spend some time on the playgrounds and you'll know what you already know.

Black athletes have incredible leg strength and leg build and their anatomy is much different. they are built for speed and many of the average joes can seriously sky towards a rim. Little guys dunking all over the place,,,leg power. Jimmy was correct in what he said although put it together in wrongest of ways and made some really stupid generalizations and ignorant assumption along the way...layers of stuff in that petite ramble.

We laymen have know way of knowing who was descended from who but you are correct...just some seriously fast black men running that race. If the cultural forces were different our black brothers and sisters would probably cruise hard in a swimming pool..other sports too.
