Yikes! My new G5's Software Update panel just lit up with a bunch of updates. No. 1 are Security Updates for 10.4.5 and Panther 10.3.9; also iTunes goes to 6.0.4, iPhoto goes to 6.0.2, and Front Row goes to 1.2.1.

Check your Software Update in System Preferences for them all. As always, don't forget to Repair Permissions...I do it before AND after any significant update. I also check my HD for Directory fragmentation with DiskWarrior's "graph" feature, just to be safe...and if it's over 5% I'll sick DiskWarrior on the HD.

good advice about RP both before, and after. And if it is a .x update to the OS, it is best to download the combo updater, and run it as a stand alone, and not do the update through Software Update.

I know, I know. 99%+ of people have no problems with Software Update. If you want to be far more sure that you wont have issues, do the Combo as a stand alone. I save them all up and put them on a CD. So I have the OS instal and the updaters on disk so i don't need a connection to get back up and running.

The first time my wife updated her iMac from 10.4 to 10.4.something, she did it through the Software Updater. It really messed up the system and I spent a couple nights on the phone with Apple Tech Support getting help in getting everything backed up and running again.

Thanks for the advice on downloading the Combo Updater and running it separately. We'll do that this time.

also, after a bad update, if things go strange, download or reapply the combo updater. It can fix a bad update sometimes.
