I go home for lunch, and when I go back to work I take the trash bag out. I go to the dumpster, open the lid and as I throw the bag in, I see a MacBook Pro box in there. The cardboard and plastic recycling bins are right next to the garbage bin, why this person didn't recycle the box I could not understand. how can you be so selfish and not care about environment at all?

Look, before you guys accuse me, I didn't want to offend anybody. I am a Mac user too. I know that most of us would never do such a thing, but it made me mad when I saw there are such people around us.

I still have the box to my mac plus, purchased in 1988, up in my attic. I wonder what that makes me?

We used to have paper recycling bins in all our offices, and I was pretty good about putting my paper in there. Then late one afternoon, I noticed that the cleaning person coming in, grabbing both the wastebasket and the recycle box and tossing both in the same trash-bin -on-wheels they had.

I called the maintenance department the next day, and without identifying anyone, told them what happened. They seemed kind of evasive, but I have to admit, they solved the problem:

Next week all the recycle boxes were gone.

Still are.

One thing that surprises me -

While there are a lot of efforts to get people to recycle at home, efforts seem non-existent in the work place at least here in nyc.

i'm curious if thats true in other places.

Where I work the trash and recycling are collected on different days and into separate toters. Of course there are some custodial workers who don't go by the rules, and not all supervisors are consistent about writing them up for it. And of course, if they come across a recycling container that someone has thrown food waste or other trash in to contaminate the batch, it often all becomes trash. It would take too much time to separate out the still uncontaminated paper or other material.

Same thing happened here... except not the same result. A co-worker saw the janitor throwing it all in the same bin, and I overheard the conversation. I said something to my boss, and the next day I got a call from the head of the custodial department wanting to know which janitor it was. I was assured that it wouldn't happen again. They didn't fire the guy, but I'm pretty sure he got chewed out.

Recycled an old Performa a couple of years ago. Ferreted the box and packing out of the attic and sent it to the recycling center as if it had just been opened. They called me to reference that only Mac users went that extra mile.

Yep, there're AHs everywhere.

Anybody remember George Segal's comment in THE DUTCHESS AND THE DIRTWATER FOX? He and Goldie Hawn were stretched out and tied down in the sun to die, the camera does a slow, rotating zoom in and when the zoom finally ends on his face, he spits out the cigar and says: "AHs - everywhere you go - AHs". they don't write many like this anymore.

When I put my B&W G3 out of it's misery it's going back into the original box and packing mat'l.

Probably didn't put it in the recycling bin because it still had the MacBook Pro in it and they didn't want to contaminate the cardboard recycling.




And yeah, unless it was covered with goo, I would have grabbed the box and tried to sell it.

So you didn't tell us...did you put it in the correct bin? Or did you just point at it and fume?

if I could have reached it, I would have put it in the correct bin, for sure. But I didn't feel like climbing in the dumpster when I was supposed to go to work, just to fix someone else's mistake. This was one of those huge metallic dumpsters, not a small plastic trash can.

What would you have done in this situation?

And I thought this was going to be about a certain radio personality who occasionally promotes Macs.
