Most challenging olympic event?

Which event do you think is the most demanding in terms of athleticism, commitment to training, and best represents the Olympic spirit? My pick:

Horse jumping! What could be more athletically demanding and representative of the Olympic spirit than middle age rich folks riding quarter-million dollar horses over fake fences?

Seriously, I think basketball should be right up there. Its got it all: endurance, fine motor skill, teamwork, plus the sport is accessible (OK, I'm short so that is kind of a built-in disadvantage, unless you're Spud Webb ). I suppose if you consider the ancient Olympics you would have to choose something that was an individual event, like the pentathlon. Discuss amongst yourselves.

That sounds kind of like sailing.

The Olympics just haven't been the same since they eliminated the chariot races.

Talking seriously, I don't think it's really a valid question. Any sport where you're competing at the world level requires that you push the envelope of human abilities.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

What davestar said but looking at pure conditioning, I would argue Water Polo.

Tread water endlessly and get mauled constantly

“No persons are more frequently wrong, than those who will not admit they are wrong.” -- François de La Rochefoucauld

"Those who cannot accept the past are condemned to revise it." -- Geo. Mathias

The German word for contraceptive is “Schwangerschaftsverhütungsmittel”. By the time you finished saying that, it’s too late

How do the equestrian events push the envelope of human abilities?

No one sport is at the pinnacle of all those things.

Athleticism? Does basketball demand more "athleticism" than gymnastics or soccer or water polo?

Commitment to to training? Um, which event is it again where you can slack off and still compete on an Olympic level?

And as for the "Olympic spirit", what is that exactly? IF you define it as open to all with as few boundaries as possible, I guess you could say the marathon. All you need for that is the ability to run, a stretch of land and the willingness to train to your fullest potential. Heck I guess you don't even need that much land, you could just run up and down the block a few thousand times.
