why is it the easiest things always seem so hard in ID, but i could do it in seconds in quark?

and im not a newb, cut my teeth on painmaker all the way to 6.5

ok, heres what i want:

black text logo on white background, saved as a tif file from photoshop, no vector version available

want to place logo on photo, but make logo white and have background "none"

3 steps in quark and its exactly like i want. digging in ID for 10 minutes, nothing

help please, winner gets a cookie =)

Not sure. I'm curious how Quark does it... anyway, I'd do it in PS and link.

Convert it to a bitmap image and it will work.

Before version 7 it couldn't, unless it was a bitmap image.

i dont want a freaking bitmap, but that worked -- what if the logo was grayscale instead of black?

and what if i change my mind and want it, say gold? more photoshop work?

sorry to rant, just took too long to do something i expect to be able to do in a few clicks

heres how quark does it

logo on left is the effect i wanted in ID, same grayscale tif file i couldnt get to work in ID

logo on right is the same thing, but i made the right half lighter in photoshop and then colorized

edit: did it all the time before V 7 too

edit 2: thanks you guys for the help, sorry if im coming off snotty, just annoyed with this

Of course not. Make it any color you want in ID. Works on bitmap images just like it does in Quark.

I just tried it in version 6.5 and couldn't get the background to be transparent unless it was a bitmap image. Grayscale tif background stays white. How did you get it to work?

Once it's a BW bitmap, you can assign any color you want to it in ID without having to go back into Photoshop.

(Mike beat me to it again. tongue sticking out smiley)

what mike said...

On anoither note, Have you tried placing images as a layered .psd file?

Instead of a clipping path or changing of the background color, make your file a layered .psd file with the object or image floating on the layer with no background. ID now reads this file just like a native file.

I no longer make clipping paths or worry about background colors. I have also had no complainants from prepress during rips either.

I just link PSD files. Bitmaps don't anti-alias or otherwise blend very well.

Is the bitmap conversion done with in ID?

I convert to bitmap in Photoshop but I like them to be around 1200 dpi at 100% so I res them up before I convert if they're not that high. You're right, the bitmaps don't anti-alias but if you're dealing with solid art, the high dpi usually takes care of that.

This is always a last resort if I can't get a vector art file.

I've had really good luck on a couple of occasions taking simple, fairly low res logos/art, making a selection of the the graphic, converting that to a work path and then dragging the path into a new, high res file and then filling it. It's not perfect, but it's gotten me to home plate a couple of times.

I always convert to vector and charge up the yinyang for it. (I have an associate that's very good at it.)
There's no excuse in 2008 for not having a logo in a vector version, Victor.
