I don't drink wine, but I'm having some people over tomorrow and want to get a white wine to offer them. Knowing this group, they'll have some before the food is served and drag the remnants to the table. (Fine with me.) The meal will have an oriental flare, if that makes any difference at all.

It's under ten bucks. Decent. And readily available at pretty much any liquor store.

It's not white, but do try their Shiraz. Good stuff.

If it's spicy oriental, get a gewürztraminer (pronounced gah-vertz-trah-mean-er, or gah-vertz, for short) - it pairs well.

Gewürzt is a type of wine (like a Cab or Pinot Grig), not a brand, BTW.

Not Chardonnay, probably too heavy. Luxie probably has the appelation, though not the spelling, right.

Or a Pinot Grigio. Just about anything under the Robert Mondavi Woodbridge label is good and relatively cheap.

for $2 a bottle ($3 in NJ), 2-buck chuck's is a really solid wine - well, at least the reds.

you see people walking out of Trader Joe's carrying half a dozen cases of the stuff. it's unreal.

As to Chardonnay being too heavy, I disagree, and I heartily recommend Kendall-Jackson as a medium-price best buy. Just don't make the mistake of chilling Chards -- like all Burgundies, chilling removes all of the flavor. Serve a t room temp or slightly below -- say 60 degrees.

In other Chards I also like the Duck Pond from Washington State, and I regularly drink the previously recommneded Yellowtail from Australia as a cheap (or is that "value"?) best buy. Two-buck Chuck (Charles Shaw) whites are all pretty bad, actually.

Of course there are those who prefer a Pouilly-Fuisse or a Chasagne-Montrachet, or in my case Kistler, but those wines are far too expensive for "happy" drinking.

And, Voigniers stand up well to spicy food......

Please ignore everyone telling you to buy cheap junk wine. If price is an issue, some moderate wines that go well with Asian food would include Rieslings like Firestone, or any Gewurztraminer in the $12+ range. If you want to be more fancy, a nice blended wine called Conundrum is about $25 and goes great with Asian fare. They usually have it at Safeway.

Yes, some of them are ok, but sometimes after having good wine and going back to those, they just taste bad. They seem to have some residual sugar which makes them more palatable, but Merlots, Cabs, & Syrahs aren't supposed to be sweet. I think they are better deals than many wines under $10.
