Aaargh. One of my daughter's friends was having 'trouble' connecting to our Airport base over the weekend. So I took a look at her Dell "Xps" laptop. Vista Home Pro, blah. blah, blah.

Jeezo, what a mess. If it was human it would have been pregnant with quintuplets (of different species), have at least 20 different forms of venereal diseases, and probably be carrying one of those alien chest-bursting critters inside it. I did what I could for a grueling hour, gave up, and recommended that she 'nuke and pave' the entire system. Note that the machine JUST came back from Dell service in that incredibly infected condition. And they keyboard wasn't installed right- it was all bulged up, and looks like it scratched the screen.

I told her to call Dell, get her money back, and buy a Macbook.

Oh, and my daughter's laptop ? Macbook. No viruses. No spyware. It just works. yay !

Why people still put up with this sort of crap is beyond me.

A few months ago my mother was itching to get a laptop & regularly alerted me to ultra cheap ones advertised in the paper. I kept insisting that she get a Mac Book, but no, they're too expensive. I could see the writing on the wall if she were to bring a Windows laptop into her home so I gave her my Mac Book just to save me the grief. She thought I was being exceedingly generous but I was actually being selfish because I didn't want to have to start babysitting a computer.

A friend who has only run Mac's recently installed Parallels/XP because he needs Windows for specialized uses. He tells me that he keeps getting messages for new things he has to buy in order to make the thing work. His response: WTF! Mac aren't EVER like this.
