asking for a friend:

Can't one just hook up one's computer to the TV these days? (We got
the Panasonic 42" class 1080p Flat-panel plasma HDTV (the smallest one
Panasonic sells).

they have an intel MacBook Pro and want to show photos in Aperture (or iPhoto, i guess) on the new TV. what do they need to do this?

they also just bought a Tivo which they will connect to the internet with wirelessly. if memory serves me correctly, doesn't TiVo allow you to connect with computers in the house to share photos and music? is this iPhoto only?

maybe the display has a DVI connector otherwise you can convert from DVI to HDMI.

I use this:

with a TOS link audio connector.

I do not mirror the screens. I let my Mac Book see the LCD display as a separate monitor.

Use a s-video cable to connect macbook to any TV with a s-video input (most for the last few years) Also use a 3.5mm stereo pin to two RCA pin connector patch cable for sound from i-tunes on mac to TV audio in. Both of these cables are available at Radio Shack or other elect supply outlets K-Mart, WMT, Sears etc. I have done this with many different TV's including some older CRT's. Good Luck, JC.

It connects with iTunes and iPhoto (though I haven't messed around with that part). You have to install the "Tivo Desktop" on the mac. Works reasonably well. Nice to play music on a better sound system than my poor powerbook.

So you are recommending a $300 computer instead of a $6 cable?
