Phase contrast almost always gives interesting pics. You guys should see what some microscopic critters look like under phase, they really look like something out of MST3000-- you wouldn't believe that they were actually from this planet.

Sorry that I'm late to the party.

I did buy my niece one of those USB microscopes at Radio Shack. She mistook it for a scale and started trying to weigh things with it which needless to say wasn't very good for the optics. I did however finally get her straightened out. The software was a little weird (it was written in Farsi) and all the images came out sepia toned and rotated 72.5 degrees CCW. The software was shareware which was nice that someone had taken the time to do all that programming. I had to send a Western Union money order for $15 to somewhere in Persia, wherever that is. But hey the microscope was only $9.97 on clearance. I called up my old high school biology teacher and asked her to get one for me since they were out of stock near me. She overnighted it to me and then I overnighted it to my niece because her birthday was the next day. After taxes and shipping I only paid (22.50+22.50+9.97+$15=) $69.97 so I think I got a pretty good deal on it. She got about 13 months use out of it which wasn't bad considering the warranty was for 1 year. All-in-all I would recommend it to anyone looking for a USB scale. They cost almost $85 at Toys R Us, BTW.
