I talked to Mac Max last night and we decided to change the team name to Mac Folders @ Macresource.com

The move is designed to show we are a community at this forum. We will support this forum as long as the admins support our community growth efforts.

Many folders expressed to us their desire to keep team 38910 instead of starting a new team.

Thanks to everyone that has helped, we are now #64. Pretty good for about 1 year of effort. Keep it up everyone.

I really like the fact that the team isn't owned by the person/company/entity providing the forum.

Don't get me wrong, I like OWC and Larry has been great! Putting this forum here allowed the community to persist and I can't say enough about how cool I think that is.

Unfortunately, using my kids' school machines for any distributed computing effort is considered "theft of resources" by the district and subject to punitive action. (Someone approached them about setting up a district team earlier)

Funny thing is, it's "theft" of resoruces that would otherwise be wasted, since F@H uses cycles when the computer isn't being USED for anything else...

School districts can really be a PITA.

You can rattle their cages a bit . A few letters to the "Editor" about wasting taxpayer resources by not using the unused cycles might help. When school board elections come up maybe you can get the local newspapers to question the candidates on their plans for using the currently wasted cycles. Seems like they are setting a poor example for the kids.

It looks like the SETI folders have folded.

There are lots of unemployed folders out there just waiting to be recruited.

Does folding effect the computers in a negative way at all? I was thinking about asking my daughter's school to fold. It's a private school, so I should have less red tape to cut through. But I don't know much about how it effects the machines and I'd need to be able to convince them that it wouldn't be a drain on any of the schools resources.

Anyone want to supply me with some handy facts? I already have the link to the folding@home website, but any info about how it actually works with the machines would be helpful. I have no idea if they already fold or not, but I can ask.

The electricity isn't free.. true..
But if you look at the way most schools that I am aware of operate, the computers are ALREADY ON for most of the day with no one using them.
The time (and electricity) that is ALREADY being wasted could be put to good use by Folding.

It keeps the processor running during times that it would not be otherwise.
The only "negative" facet to this I am aware of is the generation of heat.
For 99% of desktop computers, it's just not an issue.. since they dissapate the extra heat quite well anyway. Only laptops could be really negatively affected by this.

I would suggest that you check out an Application called Increase.

InCrease is a folding client that once installed makes Folding a completely user transparent process... that is, configure it once and forget about it. It will donwnload, fold, upload, and download a new unit all on it's own...
Not even an application in the dock while it works.

You can also set InCrease to NOT fold on the "spare" processor cycles when the computer is running certain applications...

I'm pretty impressed with how little it interferes with anything. My kids play all kinds of games while folding is "running" (zoo tycoon, etc.), my wife plays a streaming audio (radio) show (it doesnt' even have to stop folding), all this on a 1gig athlon with 256mb ram. Never so much as a hiccup. I use a pentium IV 1.8, and run "Battery" (a drum sampler) for a low latency drum module while it is folding, and it never has problems (I can't believe it). The fans do run full tilt all the time though. I can't run it on my powerbook. It gets too hot, even if I set the processor down. In the summer, I even tried putting it on the air con vent. I just couldn't stand the fan blaring. kj.

What about security issues Paul. If you allow access to your system can that be compromised or hijacked by a third party?
