Which Canon digital cameras are the good ones?
Posted by: Dennis S

No time to STF. My friend is headed to Best Buy to get a camera. I don't know the difference in all the Canon lines. He wants 4-6 Megapixels. His budget is under $250.

I have a Nikon Coolpix I like, but I seem to hear more good things about Canons, but i don't know which ones.

Your friend should do his research before spending his money.

It is what it is.

Hope he's got the price of a healthy memory car figured in.
Once he does he probably won't have many options in a 4 MP Canon around $200, so probably no need to even discuss . . .

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

With rare exceptions, I don't think you can find a "bad" Canon. I think the couple of models that had some problems have now been updated and no longer appear at the camera counters. The size/budget combo is going to limit his choices in the Canon line anyway. He'll probably be very happy with anything he gets.

Ditto N-OS...many different cameras offer many different features...for many different types of users. One may be good at something while another may be good at something else. Canon is generally a good brand. A520 (<$200 or so), 4mp, 3x, 1.8" lcd) is what I was looking at before I ordered a Kodak z730 (5mp, 4x, 2.2" lcd, $179 Costco.com) for my folks. The Kodak had more to offer and was easier to use for my senior parents.

One thing I WOULDN'T do is buy one from BB. (There are better deals elsewhere, and I've read too many bad BB stories.) But to each his own.

Google for digital camera reviews and you'll get quite a lot of advice. Nice of you to try and help your friend. Good for you.

Looks like the @520 is the only thing BB carries that will fit that description.

David Pogue of the NY Times just did an article comparing a bunch of cameras in the $200-300 range. He said of the Canon in the group:

CANON A610 This year's photo-quality derby entailed 20 torture-test shots: a candlelight scene, a super close-up, a frozen action shot, a close-range flash portrait, and so on. Laymen judges ranked the results. (First-place ties were permitted.)

The A610's photos were top ranked in an astonishing 12 out of 20 tests; this camera just takes fantastic pictures in almost every situation. Not bad for $250, especially considering you also get a 4X zoom and a flip-out rotating 2-inch screen - great for shooting over people's heads, or down low for baby shots.

On the other hand, the A610 is the biggest, ugliest camera here. Canon seems to be forcing the issue: Do you want good-looking pictures, or a good-looking camera?

He's thinking about the Canon SD400. I told him I thought batteries would be a financial problem. He's buying something this afternoon because his daughter is with him and the camera's for her. He had to hang up because his phone wasn't working good.

He's in Little Rock and went to best Buy from Target, which didn't have much. I don't know many other stores for him to get something today, other than ConpUSA, Circuit City and Sears. Sear's selection is pretty thin, although I'd sure rather deal with them instead of Best Buy if they have problems.

I'd be happy to help but you don't seem to be reading any of the advice posted here, and your friend seems to be looking for something other than what you described.

I read all of the posts and my friend keeps moving the goalposts because he's buying it for his daughter, who is with him and wants it today.

Just one reason why HE should be the one doing the research, not us.

I dropped my old Canon A80 and put a helluva dint in it and it's still ticking like new.
the A95 was its replacement but I don't think they even make that one now. It looks
something like the A620. Gotta love the the flip out screen.

This month's CR has top picks. 510, A95, SD 300,
S60, S1 IS (which I have @ $270).

I just bought a Canon for my brother for Christmas. I thought the best price/capabilities for a P&S was the SD400 5MP Digital Elph

$265 at Amazon.

Don't ask who the bell's for, dude. It's you.
