Why flash videos are so much better than YouTube?

Flash videos, the kind embedded in web pages look broadcast like. Why can't YouTube videos look as good?

YouTube are uploaded by anyone, from any source.
The quality of the source material varies.
Garbage in, garbage out.

And Flash is just the delivery medium.
YouTube uses it as well.

There are tutorials for getting YouTube videos to look good. It needs decent source material. Newer videos sometimes have an option to play in higher quality, and older videos occasionally if the source was decent.

Add this text to the end of the URL for videos without the "high quality" option. It will occasionally give you the option for better quality but it does not always work.

The first one is a 9.3 MB FLV file, the second is a 17.4 MB MP4.

I read up on it some more. It looks like the &fmt=XX variable only defines the file format to download the video in. It will not improve the quality if the source material does not support it.

Videos on YouTube are converted to Flash format. Crap in crap out rules always apply, but also keep in mind that YouTube has millions upon millions of videos and users 24/7. This means lots of storage and lots of bandwidth. Higher compression rates = lower quality, but also money saved.
