Would you buy a recertified hard drive?

I don't think it's worth the risk for the savings.

For a short term project, once upon a time, I got in on the nefarious woot.com 250 gig hard drive deal.

Wasn't expecting them to last longer than the project. They're still chugging away.

I have in general but I wouldn't personally jump on that deal. I've seen them for $50 new, so the savings isnt much and I had a bad prior experience with Geeks. I have bought two refurbs direct from Western Digital and they appear brand new, just like apple refurbs.

I bought a refurb 80GB about 2 years ago for $10. Great deal, still works fine. I trust a new drive as much as an old drive. The only difference might be how long the warranty is.

have 1 (LaCie external in a mac mini -style case). Works great.

Normally, I stay away from hard drive refurbs like the plague.

As the last person said, the deal had to be good - in this case, I figured I could replace the internal with a new drive for less than the cost of the same external drive new, so the risk was minimal.

Yes.
It's not like 3 years from now I'm going to screw around trying to get warranty replacement on a drive that's worth about $15 by then, in the process sending Seagate a platter containing 500 GB of my personal data.
