So I think of myself as an audiophile--I've only actually paid for 1 music mp3 in my life (talking books are a different story), and I have my entire music collection in Apple Lossless.

But I recently came across an Irish group, Carmina--beautiful music in the Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention vein.

I can pick up the CD for about $25, or I can buy the mp3 album (256K, no DRM, on Amazon) for $9.

I'm really torn. I can barely hear a difference between 256K and Apple Lossless with my Sennheiser HD595s, headphone amp, etc., and it's nearly 3X the cost for the CD.

What would you do?

Sometimes -- only sometimes, mind you (and I could do without the tinnitus) -- having a bit of hearing loss (car accident as a kid) ain't so bad. I can hear no difference between a 256K mp3 rip and lossless.

BTW, thanks for the heads-up -- some nice music; I'll be buying the album (via AmazonMP3, eh?) shortly.

256KB MP3 files are pretty good, in my opinion. If you hardly hear a difference between the two formats, I'd say go for the cheaper option.

I understand your pain . . . but, my suggestion would be to go for the MP3, first. If you really fall in love, then it would be worth another $25 to me. Many (far too many) times the entire CD (or, Album) simply isn't worth it. See what you really think, first . . .
