That same rumor/prediction/speculation has made a few websites already.

But seeing it on CL... It's a lock.

THat'd be nice... I'm looking at a new iMac 24" in a few months... assuming I keep my spending under control.

Be nice if it was a newer model...
But I'll beleive it when it's sitting on my desk!

I JUST picked up a 2.8 with 2.75 years of applecare off ebay.

REALLY like these machines. Without FW, I wouldn't do it...

btw RAMED, my response meant that I shouldn't take part in rumor discussions since I know no rumors... it looked like it could be read with a snear - not intended...

A lot of the rumor/predicting/speculation over the last few months has been pretty accurate.

The various rumor and non-rumor sites have mentioned that trend, speculating that Apple is having more trouble or making less effort to keep intel (not Intel) secret.

I tend to think that we *will* see refreshed iMacs with the new graphics card, as the next round of Mac news. Based on timing, I'd guess that we'd see that at MSWF, not sooner. I bought a 24" iMac about six months ago, so that alone means we're over due.

But *if* it was sooner, I'd be wildly curious as to what might show up at MWSF.

c'mon, MWSF is the debut for the headless, and all but portless, highly refreshed, revamped Mac Mini. power, HDMI and enet, plus wireless... oh, and one more thing...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

ok, so what would they add to the current model to make it better?

larger drives and maybe true support for an 8 gig ram limit?

unless they are totally changing the form factor, theres not a lot to update on it

what surprised me was how the 3.06 imac stayed pretty close to the macpro in these gaming tests -- which is how some people gauge speed

The Nvidia chipset would be a MASSIVE upgrade to the graphics currently in the mini. It could effortlessly play any HD content thrown at it and be a borderline competent gaming machine. Ship it with a display port, eSATA port, and optional BD ROM optical and dual channel QAM tuner and I would be tempted to use a LART on everybody in my immediate family until they bought one.

Barefeats did a short series on editing HD videos and did not even mention FireWire, except in the Blu-ray burner product section.

eSATA is useless for most, no daisy chaining, 1 port = 1 drive and no bus power

No Firewire on the refreshed iMacs is one of the few rumors in a couple of decades of Mac watching that I would bet money on. The way I read it, Apple has declared Firewire is a pro machine only feature. I'm still hoping to scrape together the money for new machines by mid-Spring, but it looks like "new" will probably be refurbished for me to get what I want. Too bad, I really like that black bezel look on the new 'books.

I think most current eSATA ports support bus multiplexing. [www.barefeats.com] [www.amug.org]

Are there any 3.5" external USB drive cases that are bus powered? In other words, most PC users are familiar with wall warts powering their externals (says the person with only a 4 pin FW port on his computer).

there are bus powered 3.5" devices, but they cost an arm and a leg

but there are plenty of the those pocket sized USB 2 drives everywhere and all the big names make them -- saw a whole palette of them at costco today

i doubt they will take FW off of the imacs -- they just *added* FW 800 to every model where it used to only be on the 24" ones

when the ALs came out a year ago it was surprising to see all models with FW800, but they had it...

i dont see eSATA multiplex ports on any of the cases that OWC carries... looks like its still not here yeat?

It is more like hub layout, not a daisy chain. A dual external enclosure might be able to multiplex if it had the right board. The ones I have seen are 2 port or 5 port versions.

right, so more for an external drive multi-bay case solution

so if my imac had a single eSATA port and i wanted to plug in a 2.5" portable drive, and a couple of external 3.5" drives -- im SOL -- i can have any one of those (and i would need power for the 2.5")

Is something wrong with USB for the 2.5" drive?

You could get speed and multiple drive access with a 5x1 multiplier as a stand alone hub. Just put it in its own case and use eSATA connectors to the external cases. I think it is a reasonable tradeoff for not having to suffer any more with the bottleneck of FW800. jest smiley

My opinion is that FireWire was better than USB 2 ever since the latter hit the market in volume. The problem is consumers have voted with their wallets, and FireWire has stagnated. I look at eSATA as a short term solution to get the full speed out of drives until USB 3 products hit the market in 2 to 4 years. SSD drives have already hit 220 MB/s continuous read speeds. At only 600 MB/s, USB 3 might end up being a bottleneck for someone wanting to use an external two drive SSD RAID 0. That might allow Windows 7 to boot in less than 2 minutes. ;)
