using mail app my verizon outgoing mail server is suddenly "offline"! fix?

i have two machine a g5 imac and a 2.4 mbp

last week i added a pop mail account for a new business email. all worked fine on the g5 imac. not so on the mbp.

today i was finally able to get the mbp to receive incoming mail for both my personal email and my biz email. whew.

but now i've noticed that both outgoing servers are now designated "offline".

i have looked at the "edit" screen of the two mail accounts on the g5 imac (remember all works fine with this machine it sends and receives both personal and biz email) and i have copied the info exactly onto the profiles of the mbp accounts. i can't figure out what i'm not doing or doing incorrectly.

setting up mail is not my strongest skill set.

if anyone is going to be helpful, go slow and be gentle. promise?

so, how do i get the outgoing mail server on my verizon account to go online?

tia

be well

doc-

thanks for the quick reply.

that option is grayed out and not available.

i'm closing all open apps and rebooting. perhaps that will make a difference.

thoughts?

Check Preferences:Accounts:[your account]:Advanced

Make sure that the checkboxes are checked to enable the account and include when automatically checking for new mail.

If those boxes are checked and if you're sending and receiving mail normally, I wouldn't worry about it. Apple's Mail.app can be flaky at times.

This may not be your problem, but i noticed that after one of the two last software updates if you accidently mistype an e-mail address on an outgoing e-mail (ie: not using the @ symbol or another invalid format) it will give you the same error message. If I remember correctly, Apple mail used to just send the e-mail and then the mail server would send back an undeliverable notice. But it seems that now it can't even attempt to send the e-mail and it doesn't even go into the draft folder or show up in the outbox.

You have to shut down mail, restart mail and find the offending e-mail (in the draft or outgoing box) and then delete it. I reset my outgoing server settings, but I'm not sure that was necessary.

Hope this helps.

doc/mmm-

thanks for your sharing.

i checked everything on the imac matching it to the mbp.

there were no differences.

i quit mail and re-booted nothing changed.

i returned a book to the library, made a snack for daughter #2, sent out work emails from the imac and let the mbp go to sleep.

i just awoke the mbp to get some work info and dontchaknow, the mbp sent out the emails that it hadn't sent earlier! i then tested everything twice sending emails to my various emails from each account (personal & biz) on the mbp and all looks good. (fingers crossed)

i'm stunned as to what i did (or didn't do) to correct the situation.

i should take a screenshot of the mail preference windows and store that info for future reference.

now all i have to do is remember how to take a screenshot!

be well
