Memory and ram upgrade results

Thanks again to all who agreed that a dual 2.5 G5 is still a solid Photoshop machine.

I added ram, going from 3GB to 5GB and replaced two full 160GB drives with 2 500GB drives.

The machine works much better, much smoother in over Photoshop CS4 work.

CS4 only let's me specify 3072MB of ram, but since I did that and having 5GB total, Page outs are at Zero, even after several hours of work. The OS is using no hard drive space at all.

The drives are much faster.

Speeds were.

Single 160GB 7200RPM Seagate 7200.7 drive was a little over 40MBps, with two striped together the RAID could push 88MBps

well with 2 500GB 7200.11 Seagates.

A single drive was moving 100MBps in and out and the two striped together in measuring 125MBps write speed and over 200MBps read speeds. I am using 256k blocks since my files are typically no smaller then 25MB and over hitting 300MB

CS4 does see the ATI 9600 128MB video card, but it is not supported. This seems to not be such a big issue since I am not using any of the 3D features in CS4

back to work,
Jon

not a bad boost, but nothing more will help you anymore

a lowly 20" 2.4 iMac is faster in the CS3 suite by almost 30 seconds in their tests

i went from a Dual 2.0/4 gigs ram/256 meg radeon 9800PRO to some AL 2.4 iMacs/4 gigs ram/256 meg radeon 2600PROs and there was no comparison -- the imacs made the G5 look like it was practically standing still -- even with their stock 320 gig drives

the imac gets huge page ins/outs -- about 3.5 gigs on each right now -- but thats with 24 days of uptime, no restarts or quitting any programs

pshop still seems to run just fine, just opened 10 photos starting at 126 megs to 75 megs -- took no more than a few seconds...

I've got 4 Intel iMacs. The 20" 2.0 Aluminum ones are overall about as fast as my G5 tower. The CPU is actually slightly faster, but with 2GB ram and slower MB parts, in the end it's no faster. Now my 24" 2.33 White iMac is faster, a good 25% or slightly more. The last iMac is the same 24" but with a 2.16 CPU, and for some reason the 2.33 is noticably faster.

I tend to keep my Macs a while, the one prior was a dual 1.0 G4 Quicksilver bought as the Fed-Ex guy was rolling them into the Apple store. They had me packed up at 11:45 but I had to wait for noon before they could actually sell it. Before that? A Power Center Pro 210 and one step back, a 7100/66

I think an 8 core 2.8 Mac Pro would make me happy
