The small 2.5" external drives are nice but can I boot from one since it would require the Mac to be on to have power? I am, of course, thinking in terms of a backup drive.

Yes, that's the beauty of 2.5" FW drives.

I boot from one all the time. The Mac powers the drive. Start the Mac, hold the Option key, and select the FW drive at the appropriate time.

Or if the Mac is on and booted and the FW drive is connected, Restart, and hold the Option key.

Of course, you have to have an appropriate OS installed on the external drive.

Yes--but not all cases are bootable. Works fine with my OWC mercury 2.5" enclosure.

I have the same OWC enclosure. It works fine

And I seriously and strongly recommend to all of you who have bus-powered drives to switch to wall-powered cases at the earliest possible time. Bus powered drives are just plain and simple very bad news, despite the fact that OWC sells them......

My 2 cents, as one who found out the hardest way possible.
