. . .'Life' picked up for full season. . .

'Lost' Returns in January
Season five gets a two-hour premiere on Jan. 21

Set your "Lost" countdown clocks to 75 days: ABC has set the show's season premiere date.

The show will open its fifth season with a two-hour premiere starting at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday, Jan. 21. It marks a return to Wednesdays for the show, which aired after "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursday nights at the end of last season.

Other than the date and the episode titles -- "Because You Left" and "The Lie" -- ABC hasn't released any information about the new season. It's expected to run for 17 episodes -- with the 17th partially making up for last year's strike-shortened 14-episode season -- which would put the season finale in late April or early May.

It remains to be seen what the addition of "Lost" to Wednesday nights will mean for ABC's current lineup on the night. " Private Practice," which ABC picked up for the full season a couple weeks ago, is likely staying put, but it's potentially bad news for either "Pushing Daisies" or " Dirty Sexy Money," both of which have been struggling in their second seasons.

The network has yet to announce a full midseason schedule. ABC also has three comedies, including NBC pickup " Scrubs," and three new dramas on tap for 2009.

Answers to some of the questions posed by those developments will start coming in 75 days.

NBC Gives 'Life' More Life
The network picks up nine more episodes of the drama

The ratings for " Life's" Wednesday debut this week weren't great, but they were good enough to earn the show a full season on NBC.

The network announced late Friday that it's picking up nine more episodes of the second-year cop show, which stars Damian Lewis. The move comes after the series showed signs of ratings improvement following a move from Friday to Wednesday nights.

"This unique crime drama continues to offer consistent and compelling stories each week," says Teri Weinberg, executive vice president of NBC Entertainment. "We love 'Life' and are thrilled that we get to see more of these characters and amazing new cases."

Wednesday's episode drew about 5.9 million viewers, in line with what "Life" had been averaging on Friday nights. Its performance among adults 18-49, however, improved by 33 percent, from a 1.5 average on Fridays to 2.0. The show also grew in its second half-hour coming off a weak "Knight Rider" lead-in.

The show is the second of NBC's sophomore class to earn a full-season pickup; the network picked up the back nine episodes of " Chuck" before the season started. First-year shows "Knight Rider" and "Kath & Kim" have also earned full seasons.

I dig that Life show. I like the quirkiness of the lead without becoming a caricature. I think I preferred it on Friday night, though for some reason.

. . .more info. . .

After the Lost extravaganza premiere, the series will continue on Wednesday nights at 9. Reps at ABC have told me that a decision on new time slots for Private Practice and possibly Pushing Daisies will be announced next week.

Episodes three through six are as follows: "Jughead," "The Little Prince," "The Place Is Death" and "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham."

It has been so long, I have forgotten what Lost was about. Not that I understood it when I was watching it anyway.

Oceanic 6 off the island. Jack going nutso about leaving the island being a mistake. Kate has Aaron. Sayid's wife, dead. Sayid is Ben's assassin. Hurleyn in (and out, thanks to Sayid) of the boobyhatch. Hurley visions of Charlie. Jack finds you-know-who in the coffin. Ben slithers in and tells Jack everybody, and he means everybody dead or alive, has to go back to make things right. Toss in one exploding boat (Vaya con dios, Micheal. Probably not so much Jin.) and one disappearing island.
