depends on where the rest of the market is heading.

VIX is still high and moving higher and other strong companys like AAPL (MO, PSA) are still pooing.

Personally, I wouldn't get in until the VIX drops alot, to like 40, and stays there.

I think the market will sink some more, especially if the auto. co. bail out doesn't happen. It would not surprise me to see a price in the $60s area.

If Ford comes back, they'll come back nicely. If not, It's only $100.
I don't usually play the "wild speculation" game, but I thought it was a reasonable hedge.

I suspect the Dow won't stay below 7800 very long. It may "dip" as low as 7000, but I think we'll see a rocket-rebound if it does.

I'm doing the same.

10 years from now, people will be pointing to all of the millionaires made during this crash. And many more will be kicking themselves for not buying "XYZ when it was at $2!"

Anyone dropping $10K into Ford or GM right now is either really rich, and $10K is nothing for them, or really really deeply stupid.

I read someone's take today that the new support level for AAPL is $71.88.

As for the auto companies, Ford has a business / recovery plan that assumes NO federal money. They should survive. On the other hand, GM's books show asset to debt as massively negative. In other words, their stock is currently worth LESS than zero (IIRC by about -$80/share at last count).

I generally wouldn't touch GM but if you're into wild speculation, GM has been more volatile than F lately. The trick is knowing which way they will swing--and I don't have a clue. Of course, there's also serious potential that you could lose everything in GM stock.

Actually, it was $27 per share as of the last quarter. And that will grow by about $3 per quarter or more.

If it hits $50 AND I have some money left to invest, I'll do it.

I've been watching a biography on FDR. The parallels with the early 1930s Republican administrations is amazing - and scary - especially when it comes to the banks.

It's possible we'll lose millions of jobs in the next 2-4 years.

So even if it hits $40, there may not be any where for the stock to go up for awhile.

I own some Ford bonds that mature in January of 09. I am hoping that they hold on till at least after they mature. I don't have the nerves to invest any more in Ford, but I would be betting on Ford before I would GM.

Ever since I had such a POS Chrysler company car, many years ago, I would never invest in Chrysler.

Paul, I was also thinking of posting about F at the sam time as AAPL, so you have read my mind. but you know, I do have some extra funds (I'm FAR from rich) sitting around that will one day (in about 14 years) be used as the kids' college tuition money. I have a time horizon that long at this point. So, that $10,000 at $1.30/ share and in 14 years it's at $50/share (?who knows?)..........

I wouldn't risk anywhere NEAR $10,000 on a company with as much debt and financial obligation to the Unions as Ford, with such a slow inception-to-market time as a car company.

I might agree if you're talking closer to $2-3000 though... IF you do a lot of homework.

IF it pays off, it should pay back pretty big.. but there's every chance in the world it won't.

Andy doesn't seem to realize that if the Big Three are not bailed out, they alone are going to be good for at least a couple of million people being tossed to the curb. Not even looking at those who are immediately affect, you will also have to look at the spin-off effect among companies that depend on the Big Three and then you also have to consider the effect a bankruptcy will have on the millions of retirees whose pension and health care benefits are dependent on them.

And, in the end, even if they are bailed out, would you buy from a car from a company that may go bankrupt a year or two or three down the road? Get real!

He's basing his "theory" (like so many of the analysts that he so derides) on comparing today's numbers to those of almost a hundred years ago and in comparing "P/E" and "book value". Pfffttt...he should look at the fundamentals of the economy before he opens his yap.

The Toronto Stock Exchange has lost over 40% of its value in the past six months. Canada has gone from a $13 billion budget surplus to a deficit position in less than a year.

In the end, AAPL is a good company to own but I certainly wouldn't own it because of some guy who's good at posting numbers.
