Michael Jackson is really cool, too. I hope he wins a Grammy.

"I have no problem with Pete being on the team. I have a problem with the gambling part and putting him in the Hall of Fame. That's the worst thing you can do. It undermines the whole integrity of the game. "-- Brooks Robinson

I lived in the 'Nati for a good seven years in the '90s. Rose was a fairly big celebrity there, as might be expected...even with the "scandal." Thing is, if he bet AGAINST his team, yeah, I'd have a big problem with his going into the Hall of Fame. But he didn't. So what? The man had a gambling problem, big f'ing deal. Did he not try to make amends? How many others do? How many others drink or drank too much, or did drugs or beat people or whatever, unabashedly, and they're in the Hall?

MLB uses Rose as an ever-so-convenient cover to hide their own skeletons. And they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I agree. Give the man his due. He did more for baseball than probably half the players in the Hall of Fame.

Here's a couple of hypotheticals...

He's managing the team and betting that they will win THAT game. How does he manage his pitching staff? For today. Screw tomorrow.

He gets behind to his bookie. Bookie says, "OK. Here's how you can get square..."

Remember... he's not laying bets at the window in Vegas. He's betting with a bookie. If a bookie's got a guy on the inside, he WILL find a way to use him.

There is just no way that you can allow it at all. Ever. It is toxic poison. The game becomes WWF, or whatever wrestling called now. A soap opera rather than sport.

If the hall of fame is where all of the best players reside - put him in there. If it's some kinda 'great men of baseball' say so and start removing other scumbags that got in over the years.

This is exactly why they have the rule. He knew that it was the biggest no-no in the game. He thought he was above the rule. This is exactly why he should never be allowed in. He is a smug, bitter man and only finds fault in others. And to lie over and over again about something that people knew he was lying about only makes him a pretty stupid individual as well.

I would however love to see Petey and Barry on some kind of reality show where they had to share about a 100 sq. ft. studio apartment. Just the two of them. By episode three I think we'd be watching the coroners report being read for one of them.

It's actually the Natonal Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Pete and his accomplishments are welcome in the museum.

But the Hall is for honoring, by enshrinement, those that have honored baseball through their record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which they played.

It is not the National Baseball Hall of Best Players. They are welcome in the Museum. It is the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Actually - Rose said someting on Maher that really made an impression.
He said he played every game like it was his last.
That's true and has never been contested.

I remember sitting at a Dodger game in LA when Daryl Strawberry played right field. A liner was laced to right, and as I watched ball and player close distance Strawberry subtly pulled up. I wasn't sure if I had seen it right, so I asked the people around me what they saw. Each said the same.

It was the first time I saw a corporation playing a professional game, and not a player.
I haven't been back to any ballpark since.

It's a shame that you let a classic -- and perhaps the all-time worst -- malingerer in baseball taint your view of the game. The overwhelming majority of players really enjoy the game and it shows in their play and effort levels.

That I have to give Rose credit for: he was a mediocre talent who was able to wring out a very long career of exceeded expectations. I never liked the guys, but did respect that. The gambling on baseball is just unforgivable, though, given the memory of the Black Sox scandal that nearly destroyed the game.

Let's see, he was a drunk with a gambling habit.

Yeah, that's about right for the baseball.

Well said. Pete wants us all to think he's the victim and that journalists & the media are all out to get him. He just doesn't get it, or worse yet, he believes he is above it all.

I'd rather see Shoeless Joe Jackson be enshrined in the HoF. There's probably a bunch of Negro League players who should be honored too, several of them far more talented than Rose.

Actually, I admire Pete as a baseball player.

Some great quotes:

"I'd walk through Hell in a gasoline suit just to keep playing ball." -- Pete Rose

"If I had played my career hitting singles like Pete, I'd wear a dress." -- Mickey Mantle

"People practice what they're already good at" --Pete Rose, describing why as a mediocre talent, he could accomplish what he did, compared to other people.

You just CANNOT bet on baseball and expect to be enshrined in the Hall. No way.

As to the Black Sox,

On October 4, 1919, Joe Jackson accepted $5000 from gambler Abe Attell, supposed fix man for Arnold Rothstein. The money was delivered to Jackson by teammate Chick Gandil in a dirty envelope. This was belated and partial payment for Jackson's participation to that point.

Buck Weaver is the guy that was wrongly accused in this scandal. He should not have been banned. He did sit in on the meetings to discuss the fixing of the series but decided not to take part. By *all* accounts, he was the only conspirator who never took a dime from the gamblers or their bagmen, Gandil and Risberg. He was the leading Sox hitter in the 5 thrown games, at .333.

Pete Rose was one of the greatest baseball players ever. As a person, just the opposite.

For those who never saw Pete Rose in Cincinnati, he was hustle, hustle, hustle. NEVER once did Rose walk out to his postion, he ran. He ran back to the dugout. He ran out every ground ball. He ran to first even when he got a walk.

Singles became doubles, doubles became triples because he played hard, he played hurt, he played almost every game.

No current player plays like that anymore. They never run out a ground ball. They jog to first. When they get a walk, they saunter down to first, instead of running. They walk to their positions.

Rose's accomplishements as a player should be front and center at the Hall of Fame, as well as his gambling and all his other faults associated with the game.

Look at all the guys on steroids or drugs. Baseball's treatment of one crime compared to another is a little uneven.
