I guess the built in Dictionary in OS X isn't good enough?

Leopard has a very nice Dictionary app. 'Comes with the OS. Find it in the Applications folder.

Spotlight works with it. Check the top of the results list for definitions when you type a word in the search field in the menubar. Click the partial definition and it'll open the Dictionary.app and show you a detailed definition. The Dictionary.app has also got a thesaurus and displays Wikipedia entries.

It's also available from the contextual menu in many Cocoa apps. Just highlight a word and right-click or control-click and select "Look up in Dictionary."

I use the one in the Dashboard frequently. Or, I just use Dictionary.com (or Urbandictionary.com for the words or phrases I hear the kids saying these days...)

I have both of those links on my Bookmark Bar at the top of my browser window so it's quick and easy to get to them.

Yes, OSX Dictionary suffices. I am looking for more detailed info and especially good examples of various usages of the words. I do use dictionary.com and urbandictionary.com as well. I just dislike to having to scroll through the ads. As English is not my primary language I want to be sure my command of it is proper

Well, the definitive source is the venerable OED. Of course, you have to have an affiliation (i.e., university) or a subscription, but if you want to find the earliest use of a word, this is the place.
