Sign #596,438,001,471 of the ongoing economic meltdow - Free samples at McDonalds

Business is that slow. The McDonalds near work has started offering free samples every Friday. Apparently with the blessings of corporate since they've got four color signage fully compliant with the other ads and posters.

And it's not to flog some new product being test marketed either. This is the everyday fare; nuggets, burgers, salads, their cold coffee drinks.

Brother, can you spare a fry?

Wow! That really does say something. Another offer I've seen lately is the one from Kia. With a new program mentioned in the ad from last night, if you buy a car and then lose your job in the next year, you can return the car.

The local Kia dealer here in RNO is offering a Kia Rio for $1 when you buy a new Kia SUV.

I heard this the other day - I wonder what the depreciation schedule is. They can't afford to take back a car without discounting it for wear and tear, can they?

Actually McDonalds business is booming despite the economic slowdown and some numbers for last year suggest because of the slowdown.

I agree with billb. It's a trade down. I've seen and lived through this before. When money is tight, people trade down from fancy restaurants to fast casual. Fast casual regulars trade down to lower family style. Others trade down to fast food, etc.
Personally, we cook larger quantities at home when we do cook, for those nights my wife and I are busy working, meetings etc. Now we heat up the leftovers instead of grabbing something quick on the road.

The area manager said things are slow, but he's not particularly concerned as far as the long term is concerned.

I'd certainly agree that just because McD's overall is doing well, local economies often exceptions.

I'd wager quite a few McD's are not performing well in Michigan. I'm sure there are other places as well.
