What's going into 567 Giant boxes?

They should be asked to pay for reclaiming the land back to wooded lots with the money.

Our store looked pretty crappy this Christmas. The stereo section was at least half empty shelves. The rest of the store was not too impressive.

Sears looked almost as bad.

I remember back in the old days when you could shop competitors. But today it is slim pickings. Sears and Lowes and Best Buy for appliances. Just Best Buy for TV and electronics - though lots of competitors - Sam's, Walmart, Amazon exist for parts of the market.

It's too bad, in a way. CC was one of the first big electronics retailers who went into smaller markets; the original stores in the 80's were pretty amazing if the next-best thing you had in town was a TG&Y. I always got a kick out of the little runway where they slid out stuff after you'd paid for it.

Don't get me wrong, CC was horribly mismanaged over the last decade and deserves no tears on its passing, but they could have done so much better...

I stopped in our CC (while the wife shopped Michael's next door) and the GPS section was clean. The place was dead except for me and the few clerks. The few clerks on duty pounced on me immediately asking if I needed any help.

While I seldom bought anything from them, I do hate to see them go under because of the reasons stated above.

For me, Circuit City has been a "much" more pleasant experience than the loud, raucous Best Buy. Not good news at all.

I bought a new car stereo at CC last year. Good price for an iPod dock stereo, free install. I was happy with service, better price than Blue Buy. I sat in the home theatre and checked out Spiderman3 Bluray on a 100 inch projector screen.

I rarely went into a CC or best Buy when Lechmere was around.
One of the few stores that actually had [more than 2] sale items in stock.

... and yet the Big Box pet stores keep building these huge castles of a store.

Does this mean that I can now walk into my closest CC and find "going out of business" merchandise marked down a whopping 10% from MSRP?

Lechmere was my favorite "Dept" store. They had all kinds of items from 'lectronics to high end kitchen gear. There was a Lechmere bargain outlet a few miles from here in Salem NH that I bought my fridge at. Had a dent on the side that doesn't show and saved about $600. I guess Target and Kohl's are about the closest matches today but still not as fun.

The hoary giants of old keep getting swallowed up by the mists. Good Guys. CompUSA. Circuit City.

They weren't even close to being the brightest stars in the sky, but it does tug at my ticker just a little remembering the pre-internet days when places like those were the well into which I cast the disposable income of my youth.

Circuit City...let's see...in the last 10 years, I think I bought one album there...and there was that Black Friday spree 3 years ago where I picked up all their loss-leaders.

Apparently that was insufficient.

bb-

nice poetic phrasing.

though slightly off base to the above list, i'd add tower records to chain stores that i spent my money and got back what i thought was value.

ymmv

be well

Apparently that was insufficient.

I bought a tube of thermal paste from them, about 3 years ago. I guess that didn't really help, either.

my local officemax has a pretty big section devoted to computers/TVs and such -- much larger than say the staples across the road -- and it sits right next to a best buy

alas, the BB is always busy, but the OM is empty

Not for a while. For the first couple weeks at least, it will be 10% off some arbitrary price above MSRP. wink smiley

Like Sears used to do with thier "weekend specials".

Price on Wednesday was $100.00

marked up on Sat/ Sun to $110.00 so they could have a 10% sale.

The last Circuit CIty "going out of business" sale I went to was worthless. Even in the liquidation's last days the prices were still too high. I couldn't believe it.

we bought our currently fritzed out TV in the bedroom from CC awhile back... guess when when slapping the TV on its side doesn't work anymore, that we won't be buying its replacement there... bad time to try to find a savior... good luck w/ the liquidation.

I wonder when the car stereo installers will be gone. I got my stereo there during 2007 Black Friday and the installer said that if I ever get rid of the car, they will swap the original back into it for free. I was thinking about getting rid of our Windstar, where the Sony stereo is; maybe I should see about them swapping the original back in while I still can.

I always bought my movies from CC, they were cheaper than BB, plus they usually had better "exclusive" freebies.

CC was out of stock on sale items too often. I didn't even bother going there. I go to Amazon!
