Seems (so far) to be a great free converter with tons of options. The compression takes a long, long time. Under VMWare, you're looking at 8 hours on a quad-core (for high-quality settings).

When I went to checkout it said it wasn't eligible for free Super Saver Shipping, bummer.

Edit: I see that you have to go to the other screen and choose the one fulfilled by Amazon rather than just putting it in your cart. Looks like they are about $1.00 more to qualify for the free shipping, but worth it.

Okay, I'm bracing myself for the admonitions, but I'll ask anyway. I'll assume I'd need an up-converting DVD player or an HD DVD player to really appreciate them, but if I watch these on my iMac, am I going to see them in HD?

If you buy one of the combo HD-DVD / DVD discs, then you'll be able to view the DVD version on your iMac but it would not be in HD, but rather in standard DVD which is 480p. An upconverting DVD player would also only work with the DVD version, not the HD-DVD version. The only units that can play an HD-DVD are either dedicated HD-DVD players (like a Toshiba HD-A3) or a combo HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player (like the LG BH200).
