I spent a couple of weeks there, but not in places that weren't accessible by car. I loved it. My son and I drove up right after he turned 16, and it was one of the highlights of my life. I'd love to go back, but I can't find anybody that wants to go with me.

Lived on Adak (one of the Aleutian Islands) for a year and a half while I was in 4th-5th grade. Father was stationed there.

I'm so sorry Tom. A family friend was base commander at Adak.

But if that's all you've ever known...

I've been to some of the more civilized parts of Alaska that are accessible by car. My son and I drove up there right after his 16th birthday, and it was a fantastic, once in a lifetime trip. We did go far enough north of Fairbanks to get to the official boundary of the Arctic Circle. We also took a side trip up into the Northwest Territory, and, yes, many of those roads were still gravel and probably always will be, because of the harsh weather. Part of me would like to go back some day, but I doubt the wonder of that trip with my son could ever be duplicated, so I haven't made much of an effort to plan another one.

Yeh, but you're one of those southern weenies. smiling smiley Now days you could access the internet via satellite, so you can't use that excuse for running back to civilization. You're just afraid you might have to eat seal meat, which is probably kind of oily and gross.

Last time I was there we were fishermen from 7am to 1am most days. It felt good in some ways, and even though I was only there for 10 days, I started getting accustomed to it. Would I chose that lifestyle? Eh. But it might be good for me. kj.
